Most people spend a good amount of time searching about products that make them feel better, look better and make them healthier at the same time. It is a well-known fact that natural products are much better for us than products with synthetic ingredients.
Since more and more people are looking for natural products, a lot of natural cosmetics brands have made their way to the market. Some of them claim to be all-natural, yet many of these products are not as natural as the brands would like us to believe. So how is it possible to distinguish genuine natural cosmetics from products that are merely hype? When they use the word “natural,” – is it really “natural?”
First and foremost, it is important for every consumer to educate himself. Knowledge is power and educating oneself is even more important if it is about products for personal care. If someone is looking for natural cosmetics brands and found a product that looks promising, a look at the ingredients list can provide a lot of information about the product’s claim of being natural. The best thing to do in this case, is to research the individual ingredients online to see if they are indeed natural. This may seem like a lot of work, but one learns a lot by following this process. This will also provide a better knowledge and understanding of ingredients at a later date.
It is important to note that natural does not necessarily mean organic. Not every product that contains natural ingredients is also made of organic ingredients. Organic simply means that the ingredients used within the product contain little to no toxins. Some natural health food stores usually carry both natural and organic cosmetics, but here too, one can find products with these claims, even though the ingredients are neither natural nor organic.
The second most important thing anyone can do, is to be a proactive consumer. If someone is looking for natural cosmetics, but does not know for sure where some ingredients come from or how they were produced, it is important to ask. If there is a knowledgeable employee present in the shop, one could ask the employee. If no one in the store knows an answer to the question, it might be an even better idea to call the actual company itself. This can actually reveal quite a bit, after all, if the company does not respond to any inquiries, by email or otherwise, that can tell us a lot about the company and their products.
There surely are some great natural and organic cosmetic brands out there, but it is still important to remember that a product might work well for one person, but not necessarily for the other. It is therefore always better to test things out. One could use the product for a week or two and see how the skin reacts to it. This might even be the best indication of a high quality product. And what is good for our skin, is good for us.
