Precious opens today in select cities and it’s already getting rave reviews. Time magazine says Precious is “too powerful for tears” and says the movie is stronger than the book.
The movie is based on the novel Push by, and is the story of a morbidly obese 16-year-old African-American girl from the lower depths of Harlem. Claireece “Precious” Jones is poor, depressed, withdrawn. The teen has a horrible life and is pregnant for the second time with her father’s child. But there is light to this grim story, according to a review by CNN:
Sometimes, a movie has to take you down — and I mean down, really far — to lift you up. Precious is that kind of movie. Daniels, a former producer whose credits include Monster’s Ball, ushers us into the dingy Harlem flat where Precious lives, and there, amid the dank light and moldy yellow-flower wallpaper, we see the forces that have made her who she is.
This movie is already getting major Oscar buzz. In my opinion, it looks like a movie that is hard to watch at times but worth it. Are you planning to see Precious?
