Gloss Buzz: What We’re Listening to Right Now

RadicalSomething1 300x300 Gloss Buzz: What Were Listening to Right NowLIONESS: Hidden Treasures
By Amy Winehouse
A new album of recordings by the late soul singer Amy Winehouse, this album contain 12 songs  – previously unreleased tracks, alternative versions of existing hits and brand new songs  – recorded by the beehive-wearing singer who died at her London home on July 23. The label said Winehouse’s longtime musical partners Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi had spent time since her death listening to recordings of the singer, who many said never sang or played a song the same way twice.

We are Nothing
By Radical Something

We recently got introduced to Radical Something, and it was instant attraction: This two-piece collaboration of rapper Loggy and singer Josh Cocktail creates an intoxicating summertime blend reminding us of Shwayze and Cisco Adler. An acoustic, carefree vibe permeates this album – one that you’ll find you come back to time and again.

Mylo Xyloto
By Coldplay

Just as the album art was inspired by the work of New York graffiti artists of the 1970’s, “Mylo Xyloto” takes its cue from the sense of freedom those artists embodied. Songs like the frenetic “Hurts Like Heaven” and “Major Minus” contrast sharply with the delicate “Us Against The World,” and the shimmering singles “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall” and “Paradise.” The track “Princess of China” features vocals by Rihanna. Markus Dravs, Daniel Green and Rik Simpson produced “Mylo Xyloto”, with enoxification and additional composition by Brian Eno. “Like 2008′s horizon-broadening ‘Viva La Vida,’ ‘Mylo Xyloto’ draws from an expansive palette,” said SPIN while ROLLING STONE praised it as Coldplay’s “most ambitious yet…a bear-hug record for a bear-market world.” We love it – you’ll be surprised how many tracks on this album stay in your head hours after you give your last listen.

Long Live the King EP
By The Decemberists

The Decemberists released this EP of b-sides as a companion piece to their LP “The King Is Dead.” The 6-song EP features outtakes from “The King Is Dead” recording sessions at Pendarvis Farm including “E. Watson” (with backing vocals from Laura Veirs and Annalisa Tornfelt), the horn-drenched “Sonnet,” and a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Row Jimmy”, as well as the home demo “I 4 U & U 4 Me.” Can you own one without the other? Absolutely – but if you are like us, you won’t want to.

As you know, I’m covering the duration of the Avon Voices program — and the latest is that Avon traveled the 23 semi-finalists from 17 different countries to Hollywood, California to record their final performance videos for the last rounds of voting for Avon Voices.

It was pretty whirlwind from there, the semi-finalists were given coaching — voice and performance – from the likes of Maia, a Colombian singing star, and David Pack, which was all live streamed on the Avon Voices Facebook page, where they are all now archived.

Then, the semi-finalists all got professional photo shoots and Avon makeovers. Friday, July 22nd marked the first day of the Semi-Finals voting period, which will continue through August 26th, so you still have almost a month to join in and vote!

avon voices 2 thumb Avon Voices Semi Finalists Are Announced!Just today, if you check out Avon’s web site, they have announced the names of the 25 Semi-Finalist Contenders from 19 countries who will advance to the third round of Avon Voices – the company’s first-ever global online singing talent search.

The competition was fierce: Of the 6,000  videos submitted from more than 60 countries only 25 women remain in the running to be one of two women – one an Avon Representative – selected to have the opportunity to record a professionally produced album.

And, this is no small potatoes:  To date, over 2.2 million votes have been cast from around the world for Rounds One and Two.

Here’s what happens next: These 25 Semi-Finalists will continue on their Avon Voices path until mid-July, when they travel to Hollywood to record their final performance videos for the next stage of voting.   In Hollywood, they will meet with some of the Avon Voices celebrity judges, receive professional voice coaching and get a star quality makeover courtesy of Avon.

THEN, these videos will be on the Avon Voices web site, and the next voting period is from July 22 through August 26, 2011.

Finally, later this Fall, up to 10 Global Finalists will travel from around the world to New York City to meet with the acclaimed celebrity judges and record an Avon Voices anthem written by Diane Warren, which will debut live at the Avon Foundation for Women Annual Gala in New York City on November 2nd, and will be available for purchase online in certain countries.  The Gala is also the setting for the much anticipated announcement of the two Avon Voices winners.

Gloss on the Road: Steppin’ Out with New Tuneage (and a Giveaway!)

The last few months, I’ve felt a great connection to Steppin’ Out by Joe Jackson.

Tom Brislin Steppin Out 300x300 Gloss on the Road: Steppin Out with New Tuneage (and a Giveaway!)I’m never one to assume I have the ability to interpret the meaning of an artist’s lyrics — we never know what exists in their minds – but whenever I’ve listened to this tune, it’s brought to my mind the materialistic world that humans have manifested — and the one that seems to be burgeoning around me.

The obvious nature of the song seems to be about life, death, and the afterlife — the mist on the window is the haze that falls over our ‘last breath’ as we are passing into the threshold of the afterlife. I watched Henry VIII’d death knoll last night on the final episode of The Tudors and the precise same image existed there as well – he refers to life flashing before his eyes, and while he mourns the splendor of what has come and gone, he looks forward to the greater unknown before him.

We like to think of the next step, the afterlife, of one that is free of fear or wants — one that is the ultimate in peace and happiness.  I see “Get into a car and drive to the other side,” as the metaphor of our journey into the afterlife. It is referring to the fact that all of us will face our death; that we step into the ‘unknown’ and ‘feared’ night (our death), which is really the ‘light’ of our afterlife.

Perhaps life and death isn’t something that is as foremost on many of your minds — I tend to fear to the dark and morose at times — but this song is also about the simple act of aging, and how quickly our life passes by before us, and before we know it, we are out of time, and we are leaving everything we have and love behind.

But what happens next – when we get past that stage? In the aferlife, do we see the restoration to our perfect selves, and ultimate happiness?  Is the taxi is a metaphor for no matter how different we all are, and how much our own individual life experiences vary, ultimately there’s this commonality we share, and that we are all on the same ride, with the same end?

Think about that — and it makes it a lot easier to not judge or reject anything or anyone around you — and appreciate your life, for all its impasses and dramas, for short, important ride it is.

And perhaps I’m being epically dramatic – I’ve been told I have a knack for that – but ultimately, this is why I’m so drawn to this song, and so, a few weeks ago when I discovered that Tom Brislin, whose music I have been following and supporting for around a decade now, would be releasing his own version of this classic – it felt pretty much karmic. And, indeed, it’s already earned a place of honor on my iPod (especially important as over the next few weeks, I shall virtually be living on an airplane – and can use all the valuable new tunes I can get!)

You can get the song right now at iTunesAmazon MP3, and wherever else you like to get your mp3 fix. (And check out the video below.)

Now, here’s for the giveaway part I mentioned earlier: I think we all have a few tunes in our iPod that move us, for our own reasons – that we may or may not be aware of. Share what those songs are — five people will win a $15 iTunes gift card! To be eligible to win, you must follow me on Twitter (@alywalansky) – and RT my post about this giveaway (lets spread the love!) – good luck! Deadline to enter is March 5.

Billboard Launches New Chart That Ranks Artists Based on Social Network Data

Billboard recently launched a new music ratings chart that is based on activity on social networking websites. The Social 50 ranks the most active artists on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. It also uses data from MySpace, YouTube and iLike.

billboard logo Billboard Launches New Chart That Ranks Artists Based on Social Network DataBillboard says the chart “will tally artists’ popularity using a formula blending weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with weekly artist page views and weekly song plays on MySpace, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and iLike.”

What do you think? Is this an interesting way of having the charts reflect the public consensus! We think so!

Giveaway: Tidy Songs — Music Libraries Are a Mess, But They Don’t Have To Be

In the past week, even though CES is over, I’ve received an insane amount of tech-related pitch emails.

tidysongs Giveaway: Tidy Songs Music Libraries Are a Mess, But They Dont Have To BeSome excite me. Some bore me. And some, I kind of don’t understand and have to look up all the big words.

But I was INSTANTLY excited about TidySongs.

Tidysongs is a software program that helps people as lost in life as me to organize and optimize their iTunes library.

It has several features that help to do this, such as one that remove duplicate songs – (This feature is actually called REMOVE DUPLICATE SONGS, thus making it pretty easy to find.) I was shocked at the degree of duplicates I found, but then I realized this pretty much describes every aspect of my life, so nevermind. But get this: Even though the names were misspelled and the names were different, the software still found songs that were exactly the same!!! It saves you from yourself!

The copy editor in me loves that TidySongs fixes misspelled and missing artist, album, name, track, year and genre details and renames artists and albums with their correct format. Except that it sort of makes me obsolete. But, whatever. Onward and upward!!!

For those of you who actually crave some order in your life, it will fill in missing artists, years, and genres — this helps to make sure your song library is actually readable and easy to use — when fixing songs, you can choose to use information from the original album the song was released on or a compilation or greatest hits.

And, finally — it fills in missing artwork!!!  I was always the girl who cried when bilboards were misspelled (ask my mother, I once had a FIT in the Staten Island Mall over a spelling error on a pizza menu – I was two). I also hate it when books are in any way defaaced — so, if you are insane like me, you’ll probably agree your music should always look good. What TidySongs does is automatically find high resolution album artwork for each of your songs so that it displays on your computer, in iTunes and on your iPod, iPhone, TV or other music player. If you’ve tried other software, they make you do this step automatically but with Tidysongs it’s all automatic!!!

I’ve had this software for a day and I’m already obsessed with it – which is why I was so excited they agreed to do a giveaway to one reader. To have your chance to win, tweet me at @alywalansky and tell me why your life necessitates TidySongs. (You best me following me while you are there.) Want to earn extra entries? Tweet @TidySongs too and tell them! And find any of my recent posts here and Gloss and comment!

Deadline to enter is January 25. Good luck!
