Gloss Buzz: “When You Told Me Not To Go” By Tom Brislin
New York’s first bitter cold of the season came the same day as my own bitter cold — and the onslaught of the holiday season.
I’ve often blogged about my bouts with seasonal depression — I’m not necessarily a subscriber to the concept at this point, though I do believe it has a potential reality to it.
However, I do know that I very often question where home is, where I belong, and just who I matter to — doubts that even at this very minute are impossible for me to make subside. But within those thoughts is the knowledge that just about everything is subjective, and fleeting, and may not even be there at all.
Maybe that’s why I am so moved by singer/songwriter Tom Brislin’s debut single, “When You Told Me Not To Go”, a beautifully orchestrated indie ballad that speaks upon many of the highs and lows of love, loss, and finding a place to belong. Its music that may make you feel a lot of the pain and loss you have buried in yourself, but in a way that’s oddly comforting and reflective — and his music is the sort you want to listen to again and again.
I was a fan of Brislin back when he New Jersey was at the forefront of the New Jersey band scene, and now that he’s Nashville-based, I’m excited to see the first single released from his album.
Brislin is no joke — he’s toured with the likes of Yes and Deborah Harry, but my favorite works of his have always been his own creations, the more piano-based ballads and intimate vocals.
