Designer Alexander McQueen Found Dead in London
Fashion designer Alexander McQueen, 40, was found dead in his London home today. A spokesperson for the famed British dramatic fashion icon confirmed his death the the Associated Press, noting that she had no information as to the cause of his sudden death.
In a statement to PEOPLE magazine, his family said:
Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand, has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family.
McQueen’s first name was Lee and he used his middle name for his fashion empire. Fans of his edgy and impeccable work include Madonna, Lady Gaga, Sandra Bullock, and Cameron Diaz.
UPDATE: British newspaper The Daily Mail is reporting that McQueen hanged himself in an apparent suicide. His mother, Joyce, passed away last week.
