Director Guy Ritchie has brought new life to Arthur Conan Doyle’s Victorian detective Sherlock Holmes.
Robert Downey Jr. is sexy as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law is excellent as Dr. Watson. The two stars are a great combination, delivering the best buddy movie since Lethal Weapon.
Sherlock Holmesis a great movie escape and needs to be on your must-see list. But fans of the classic series should be warned—this ain’t your daddy’s Sherlock Holmes.
In a dynamic new portrayal of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous character, Robert Downey Jr. plays a buff and brainy Holmes. Sherlock has fighting skills as powerful as his famous intellect. Holmes partner,Dr. Watson likes to gamble and the pair of detectives are transformed into action heroes with brains in this modern take on the classic tale.
One part of this Sherlock Holmes tale deals with the question of how close genius is to madness at times. Holmes is a genius detective but he is also portrayed as a man who is overwhelmed by his abilities. Holmes has to self-medicate with liquor and drugs.
This film is fast, glib, funny and gross in parts. But Sherlock Holmes gets an A+ from me for non-stop entertainment from start to finish. Go see this movie!
Jude Law portrays Watson, Holmes’s longtime colleague, who is joining him in what may be their last case before the doctor starts a new life as a married man. Rachel McAdams is Irene Adler, a woman from America, who is as alluring as she is dangerous, and whose tempestuous relationship with the detective has become the one puzzle he cannot solve.
The bad guy in this tale is Mark Strong, who plays Lord Blackwood. Eddie Marsan appears as Scotland Yard’s Inspector Lestrade, who is both impressed and frustrated by Sherlock Holmes.
