Like Johnny Cash, hairstylists and sullen teenagers, I live in black. My favorite outfits all involve some variation of black, studded details, bold shoulders and leather. Mention “pastels” and my brain immediately cues up images of Easter eggs, baby showers and Grandma’s floral print sofa. Yikes.
So imagine my surprise when I found myself completely obsessed with the lightly hued handbags from Carla Mancini’s Spring 2010 collection.
While the rest of the collection does feature vibrant colors like fuchsia, Kelly green and fiery orange, it’s the barely-there neutrals that I’m coveting. I’m making it my mission to carry the ivory studded satchel and slouchy nude convertible tote for Spring, as well as the lavender studded carry-all to update the black version I already own. They’re the perfect complement to the season’s sorbet-palette which I am now inexplicably trying to integrate into my wardrobe as we speak.
Artfully blending the ladylike colors with heavy metal details, Carla Mancini designer Mariana Goschin, keeps it pretty and polished but never prissy. Pyramid studs, chains and trend-forward silhouettes are softened with dreamy shades of blush, lavender, ivory and buttery yellow but don’t lose their edge. Add the cool matte python and soft washed leathers imported from Italy, and it’s more than enough to lure me away from the Dark Side.
The Carla Mancini collection is available in select Nordstrom locations and other high-end retailers, with prices ranging from $475-$600. Because every bag is crafted by hand in Los Angeles, only a limited quantity is released each season — and with celebrity fans like Kate Hudson, Rachel Bilson and Winona Ryder, Carla Mancini is in high demand.
I’m just crossing my fingers that I won’t have to wrestle an A-Lister at Fred Segal to get my hands on one.
