What celebrity gets it right every time? (Or at least, most of the time?)

Cate Blanchett, hands down. She manages to always make choices that are a great balance between off-beat and adventurous while still elegant. Her colorful red carpet choices always complement her natural beauty and personality, never overwhelming her. |
Most memorable or favorite Oscar dress and why?

It would be a tie between Chloe Sevigny’s halter Yves St. Laurent that she belted with a leather belt at the 2000 award show, and Michelle Williams in the beautiful marigold pleated chiffon Vera Wang dress she wore in 2006. Chloe for her simple yet original sensibility and Michelle for the beautiful color and delicacy of her dress. |
Least favorite Oscar ensemble and why?

Least favorite would be Gwyneth Paltrow’s 1999 Ralph Lauren dress when she won Best Actress (for “Shakespeare in Love”). The dress reminded me of a cotton candy ‘80s prom dress and was ill-fitting around the bust. |
Favorite trend on the red carpet you’ve seen this season? How can women translate that to their own wardrobe?
The trend of red carpet references to Old Hollywood glamour and less of the Boho and ‘80s-inspired trends is really nice. Women can translate this to their wardrobe by choosing items with great fit and tailoring. In the ‘40s and ‘50s, women focused more on having fewer pieces that were well-made and fit well on their bodies. Also, pay attention to the details on garments, especially trims, accents and other little embellishments in the design that can make it stand out. Adding a brooch is a perfect accessory that can also help complete this look.
6 Oscar contenders: Mo’Nique, Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Carey Mulligan, Sandra Bullock. If you could dress each one however you wanted, how and why?
Mo’Nique: I would reference vintage grecian Madeline Vionnet and Billie Holiday in a beautiful gold color to complement her skin and figure.
Helen Mirren: Valentino couture silk chiffon with sheer sleeves, a billowing skirt and a wonderfully beaded embellishment on the neck. I love the second to last look show in the Fall ‘09 couture show, but in red.
Meryl Streep: A beautiful evening pant suit a la Catherine Deneuve in a pale cream or white color and a touch of color with the blouse.
Emily Blunt: Custom Christian Dior. She has the Cate Blanchett factor and can carry something a little more edgy and interesting yet not make you feel like she’s trying. Definitely something a bit more colorful.
Carey Mulligan: Chanel Couture. A dress that would be interesting enough to complement her quirky look yet delicate enough to not overwhelm.
Sandra Bullock: Its time for her to have her big fashion moment. She would be great in something really dramatic and a bit more unexpected and bold from Stephane Roland or Alexis Mabille- two outstanding Parisian couturiers. Solid colors and minimal jeweled embellishments here.
If you were attending the Oscars, what would you wear?
I would wear a take on a formal gown in well tailored, elegant black or nude leather. Haider Ackerman goes to the Oscars type of thing.

Agree with Cate the Great! She is a true fashion icon. She almost always gets it right, and even if she gets it wrong, she still carries it off to make you possibly consider it’s right! IMO she does old Hollywood glamour the best out of our modern stars.
Agreed! Cate is brilliant. Her one-shouldered pale yellow Valentino in 2005 was like buttah… but the aubergine sash and diamond shoulder brooch were beyond divine.
