email

For those of us fastened to the red carpet this year at the Emmy awards, there was absolutely a sea of trends to be seen. Dimitri James, Celebrity Makeup Artist and Founder of Skinn Cosmetics, agrees — and shares some trend alerts he noticed.

Last year, red was seen on many a screen siren. However, this year celebs tapped into a color palate of soft subtle flesh tones. The cuts of the dresses and gowns were also different. Last year ruffles prevailed and this year the dresses were edgier with a little more rocker chic. The 2010 Emmys also saw a prevalence of soft draped Grecian gowns with embellished Egyptian collars.

Makeup to Match

Of course, NUDE, BLUSH and CREAM frocks call upon a totally different makeup regimen, as compared to bold colors and fiery reds.

Eyes: Bridget Bardot in Inspiration

The make-up this year was retro in inspiration. We saw lots of heavy shaded lids and heavy upper lid over extended black eye liner. Many a celeb sported heavy, full band, high quality mink lashes and sharply defined brows. Think Bridget Bardot meets Mad Men.

Skin

On the red carpet we saw softly luminous skin, covered with mineral make-up and highlighted with natural skin illuminators. Cream blush, like Skinn’s Sizzle Color Touch, in soft pastel shades circled the cheeks.

Lips

The least obvious feature was also the most “on trend” as it relates to make-up. Lips are no longer just sheer glosses over natural lips. Instead red carpet lips were fully lined with matte nude and beige toned “fat smudge stick style” lip liners like Skinn’s Smudge Stick for Lips in Prose. They were likewise fully covered with nude creamy “skinny dip” shades of neutral lipstick. Lips were then either powdered over for a totally matte nude lip or glossed over for a nude creamy shiny lip. Although the lips were fully and heavily lined, lip liner on the red carpet was subtle. No dark 80’s liner here. Instead, celebs used fat smudge stick liners to create a clean and well defined lip.

Star Beauty – Get the Look

Dimitri’s Emmy Favorite: My Favorite celeb this year was Kim Kardashian! Kim was flawless from head to toe. Her Grecian draped dress with the embellished Egyptian style collar was matched perfectly by her softly loose, up swept hair and heavily shaded silver, gray and charcoal lids. Kim’s naturally illuminated skin was the perfect back drop for her nude fully lined creamy beige lip stick and sheer gloss.

To get Kim Kardashian’s look

First, layer skin with a natural illuminator in a sheer candlelight or terracotta finish (Skinn’s Natural Light Skin Illuminator is a great option.) Next, dust over a layer of cotton and mineral make up. Smudge the upper eyelid and over extend the outer corners with a fat black waterproof smudge stick. Be sure to apply a full band of thick long mink lashes. Then apply a silver shadow to the eyelid and a dark charcoal gray to the crease, followed by a shimmery nude under the brow, Apply a cream blush, like Skinn’s Sizzle Color Touch, in a nude beige pink to cheeks .Finally, line the lips fully with a fat nude toned smudge stick liner, like Skinn’s Smudge Stick for Lips in Prose, and fill in with a creamy nude lip stick. Finish with a sheer glass shine gloss.

Other Lust-Worthy Red Carpet Beauty Looks

Lea Michele from Glee

First, apply a total coverage matte foundation all over the skin and follow with a cream blush, like Skinn’s Sizzle Color Touch, in pinkish mauve. Then, dust entire face with a glowing cotton and mineral powder. By layering the mineral makeup over the matte foundation and cream blush, you create a naturally creamy and glowing look without any hard edges.

Eyes: Apply a heavy coat of navy blue over entire lid and blend a plum through the crease. Then apply a matte nude shade under the brow. Line the upper lid and over extend outer edge with a black smudge stick liner. Finally, apply a full band of black lashes to upper lid and coat fully with black mascara.

Claire Danes — Temple Grandin

Fully cover skin with a light sheer foundation, blended with an illuminator like Skinn’s Natural Light Skin Illuminator. Then apply a sheer pink cream blush, like Skinn’s Sizzle Color Touch, to cheeks, finishing with a light dusting of cotton and mineral foundation. Create the classic eye here by applying a sandy matte shade from lid to brow, followed by a deep plum brown in the crease. Fully line the lip with a matte beige smudge stick liner, like Skinn’s Smudge Stick for Lips in Prose, and finish with a creamy nude gloss.

Sofia Vergara – Bridget Bardot meets Grecian Goddess

To achieve this look, first apply a full coverage matte foundation to the entire face. Then apply a beige pink cream blush, like Skinn’s Sizzle Color Touch, to cheeks and follow with a good buffing of a pearly mineral powder foundation.

Before applying eye shadow, first apply a full band of long, lush mink lashes to upper lid and fully line entire eye with a rich golden brown smudge stick. Then create a classic eye by dusting a nude taupe from lash line to brow. Fully brush a dark sable brown through crease to outer corner and blend with large powder brush. Finally, apply a heavy coat of black mascara to upper and lower lashes .

Eva Longoria Parker – If Eyes Could Kill

To achieve this look, first prime eye lid with a sheer coat of cream blush, like Skinn’s Sizzle Color Touch, in a golden coppery shade. Next, dust a sandy shade of pearlized shadow over lid and a khaki brown through crease. Apply a full heavy lash strip to upper lid, followed by a heavy coat of a dark brown smudge stick liner. Follow with a thick coat of black mascara to the upper lid only, and use a lighter brown mascara on the lower lashes.

Fully line lips with a nude matte smudge stick, like Skinn’s Smudge Stick for Lips in Prose, and apply a creamy nude lip stick over the entire lip and liner.

Insider Trick: Separate a Kleenex tissue and place the thin single sheet over the lip. Dust the tissue with a mineral face powder then remove tissue from lip. The result? Behold, a perfectly matte nude lip that is defined and fully covered.

January Jones

Her eyes were equally to die for. To achieve this look, apply a coat of pearly silvery blue shadow to entire lid and a lighter shade of the same color under the brow. Then line the entire eye with a shimmery black liner, smudging a darker shade of shimmery silver blue shadow on top. A heavy band of mink lashes applied to upper lid and a nude gloss to lips finishes the look.
