Donna Johanson and her daughter Lauren named their first two goats Sugar Muffin and Precious. This mother daughter team makes Chivas Goat Milk Soap on a small farm just outside of Los Angeles. They combine fresh goat milk with natural ingredients to make each bar.
After moving to a farm, Donna began making food from her goats’ milk and eventually soaps. They were so popular that her friends and family encouraged her to start a skin care company. Lauren has traveled extensively around the world–and has worked on a lavender farm in New Zealand and studied yoga and Ayurvedic medicine in India. When she returned to California she joined her mom to create Chivas.
Now, mother and daughter are committed to making products that turn healthy goat milk into a whole skin care line. Donna milks their french alpine goats and mixes the ingredients for the soap. Lauren designs the essential oils that are added to create each scent. The soap is hand poured, cooled for a day, then each bar is hand cut and trimmed.
Why is goat milk perfect for skin care products? Goat milk is nourishing with more vitamins and triglycerides that cow milk or water, gentle because the pH level is closest to human skin, and moisturizing because the short-strand protein structure is easily absorbed into the skin. It’s been said that Cleopatra’s beauty secret was bathing in goat milk!
Chivas is also dedicated to the environment, fair trade, and helping families in Niger by supporting the Nomad Foundation. Through Chivas you can donate a goat to the Taureg tribe in Niger. The gift includes a certificate and a bar of soap.
In addition to the soaps, Chivas Goat Milk Skin Care sells creams, bath slats, and lip balms.
