Americans Still Not Meeting Fruit and Veggie Goals

peas Americans Still Not Meeting Fruit and Veggie Goals50 states — and not one of them is meeting the government’s modest goals for fruit and vegetable consumption.

By and large, Americans are still falling short on eating produce. According to 2009 data from the CDC, 67.5 percent of U.S. adults at fruit less than two times a day and 73.7 percent at vegetables less than three times a day.

Do you and your loved ones fall in the not-eating-enough produce category? While my son and I eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, my boyfriend and his son all but refuse to eat anything but corn, potatoes and the occasional apple. Here are some tricks and tips for getting the non-produce lovers in your life to boost their fruit and veggie intake:

- Handy snacks. Keep a fruit bowl on the counter and within easy reach. Also, pre-cut veggies and store them in the fridge for quick snacks. While trying to push the produce on others will probably backfire, if they see you snacking healthfully often they may follow suit.

- Give it a dip. Offer tasty dips to go along with fruits and veggies. While the dips may add more calories and fat, you’re still introducing the healthy habit of eating produce. And there are many healthful dips you can try such as hummus for veggies and yogurt for fruits.

- Cook it all ways. Don’t just stick to steaming vegetables. Try sauteing, stir-frying, roasting and other cooking methods and see what tickles the taste buds of your loved ones.

- Mix it in. Soups, stews and casseroles offer great opportunities for including vegetables in the main course. When the veggies aren’t on their own in a side dish, it’s less intimidating. Fruits are great on cereals and in desserts — even people who won’t pick up a piece of raw fruit won’t turn down angel food cake and berries.

- Be persistent. Don’t be pushy and try to argue people into eating more fruits and vegetables. But do be quietly persistent. Keep serving fruits and vegetables — eventually the idea will take root.

Are You Runner Ready?

runner Are You Runner Ready? When it comes to running, all you really need is a good pair of shoes and the motivation to get out your front door.

I vividly remember an old friend of mine who decided to get serious about fitness. She started running and whenever I’d see her on the road, she was red-faced and looking like she might keel over at any second. But she started slow, built up her endurance and stuck with it. By the next year, she had shed extra pounds and was running strong and smoothly.

Health Magazine has some tips on how to find out if you’re ready to run (and how to get ready if you’re not there yet).

- Stamina. Can you walk two miles in 32 minutes or less? If not, start walking most days of the week. Start with 15-20 minutes and then add five minutes to your overall time until you get to 45-60 minutes.

- Flexibility. Lie straight-legged on the floor with a towel wrapped around your left thigh. Hold both ends of the towel in your left hand. Use the towel to raise your leg toward your chest. You should be able to reach 90 degrees. If not, you can still run, but do flexibility exercises.

- Strength. Try doing planks — three sets for 30 seconds. Also try two sets of 10 squats and 10 push ups? Easy? If not, you need to build up your strength before starting a successful running program. Incorporate strength moves like that into your workout.

How Often Do You Fantasize?

fantasy How Often Do You Fantasize?A little bit of fantasy is healthy for everyone. Even solid relationships have room for a little innocent fantasizing. But I have to admit I was shocked when I read an article about how often some men fantasize.

A contributor to Elle magazine who (shocker!) chose to write anonymously, wrote about what really goes on in his brain and the minds of his male friends. All of the men are in their thirties, happily married and some are fathers. One of the men confessed “My wife’s really smart. She’s got to have an idea how dominant sexual thoughts are in men, generally. But if she were to really think about how it’s constantly on my mind, she’d be very disappointed. She likes to think I’m more evolved than most men. But I’m not.” I’m not that man’s wife and even I’m a bit disappointed.

One man commented “There’s an evaluation of every woman that crosses my path.” Another revealed that he slows down to check out women as he’s driving and, alone in his car, he’ll say out loud “some really nasty comment you’d expect from a sexually repressed 80-year-old man.”

The author even went so far as to bring a clicker with him to public places to keep a tally and “quantify his urges.”

Sigh.

On one hand, it’s good to know that so many of us pass sexual muster with men. On the other hand, I’d rather my man only have eyes for me.

It’s a bit of a stereotype to think of men as lustfully checking out every woman. And it’s also a stereotype to assume women don’t do the same thing. After reading the Elle article, I tried to take notice of the number of men I spotted while running errands. Aware of what I was doing, I think I probably noticed more men than I typically would have. But my thoughts never strayed further than casually thinking a man was handsome.

How about you? Do you spot people in public and include them in your fantasies? As long as it doesn’t extend beyond monogamy, fantasy can be healthy — even fun! — in a relationship.

Gloss Find: GoFit Flat Band Kit

flatband Gloss Find: GoFit Flat Band KitI used to travel for work. At least three weeks out of the month were spent in hotel rooms and they weren’t all four star places. In fact, some of the places I stayed probably couldn’t have earned a half of a star no matter how hard they tried. Needless to say, not every hotel had a gym and not every location was safe for walking or jogging. Small, portable fitness gear became my lifeline when I was on the road. The GoFit Flat Band kit would be perfect for business travelers, vacations or just if you want some fitness gear that doesn’t take up too much space at home.

The bands have different resistance ratings — five pounds for the red band, 10 for the blue and 15 for the green. You can use the bands for a variety of exercises for your lower body.

Fit Tip of the Day: Twisting Lunge

JenniferLopez Fit Tip of the Day: Twisting LungeJennifer Lopez may be an actress, a singer and a dancer, but she’s also famous for more than her triple threat. Let’s face it, Lopez is pretty famous for her butt. Her curves are sexy and show that women don’t have to be sticks to be beautiful. When Marie Claire asked Lopez about the public’s fascination with her curves, Lopez said “I was always very comfortable with who I was. Confident. I’ve never looked at myself, my body, in a negative way.” So killer curves and a healthy body image … go, Jennifer!

If you would like your backside to look a little more like J. Lo’s, try the Twisting Lunge — a move Lopez’ trainer shared with Fitness Magazine.

Create A Mood Boosting Exercise Playlist

0 300x225 Create A Mood Boosting Exercise PlaylistThere are certain songs that completely enhance my mood and make me want to hit the gym.  I love to run to house music and lift to hip hop.  No matter what, I need to have something constantly on that makes me want to dance.  Studies prove that the rhythmic speed of your tunes influence your athletic performance.

Fast-paced music is great for cardio (it makes sense that I like to run to house music). The best pump-it-up music should be between 120-140 beats per minute.  If you really want to check to see if you’re maximizing your playlist for your workout routine, simply count the beats in the song or you can use a Windows BPM calculator.

Choose your favorite, most high-energy song to start and finish your cardio routine. This will help you get going and entice you to finish.  Just when you think you can’t go anymore, the song will come on reinforcing you to fight to the end.

Here are some of my personal favorite, up-beat songs that get me to the finish line:

TV Shows Feature Tasty Vegan Food

vegancupcakes TV Shows Feature Tasty Vegan FoodVegan food has become a bit more mainstream in recent years. Maybe it’s trendy because many of the Hollywood set follow a vegan lifestyle? Maybe people are becoming more environmentally aware? Or maybe because (gasp!) vegan food can actually taste good?

An episode of Top Chef Masters featuring Zooey Deschanel a while back showed that dietary restrictions don’t mean that flavor needs to be restricted, too. Some of the chefs were a bit put off by the no meat, no eggs, no dairy, no gluten guidelines that Deschanel politely requested. But delicious plates of quinoa pasta, sweet corn tamales, white gazpacho and grilled eggplant wowed Deschanel and her guests. I’m not a vegan, but watching that episode make me lick my lips and wish I was there.

And Top Chef isn’t the only show to present a vegan theme. Cupcake Wars recently had a vegan winner. And since the cupcakes were judged solely on taste — vegan principles didn’t enter into it at all — that really shows that vegan can be tasty, too.
