Gloss How-To: Keep Your Bones Strong & Healthy

healthy bones 240x300 Gloss How To: Keep Your Bones Strong & HealthyWhat do cauliflower, broccoli, bok choy, parsley, kale, Brussel sprouts and mustard greens have in common?

For starters, ounce for ounce, these super plant foods contain almost twice as much calcium as milk products, proving that you can literally strengthen your bones with the foods you eat. Healthy bones are truly a fundamental part of our vitality. Essential ingredients for strong bones include the proper kind of calcium and Vitamin D3 as well as stress reduction and exercise.

Chronic Disease Specialist and Founder of Blum Center for Health, Susan Blum, M.D. sheds light on how to achieve healthy bones with these Top 5 Tips for Strong Bones:

  1. Dairy Products Are not All Their Cracked Up to Be. Despite what many people think, dairy products are not one of the main ingredients for strong bones. Although the dairy industry may want us to think osteoporosis is a “dairy deficiency disease,” this is just not true. Once they are digested and absorbed, milk, cheese, and yogurt create an acidic environment in the body tissues. While we need acid in our stomach, we do not want an acid environment in our tissues. All our enzymes, including those in the bones, thrive in a more alkaline environment.
  2. Just Say No To Antacids. The most important think to prevent osteoporosis is to stop taking antacids. Calcium is best absorbed from an acidic environment. Antacids can actually reduce the acid so much so that they prevent adequate calcium absorption.
  3. Have Your Vitamin D Checked. Be sure to have your vitamin D3 (25-hydroxy-Vitamin D) level tested. If you already have osteoporosis, have a strong family history, or are very petite with little body fat, your level should be at least 50; 40 is fine for most other people. Living in the Northeast, sun exposure isn’t strong enough the majority of the year for us to create our own Vitamin D through our skin, so a supplement of Vitamin D3 2000 IU daily will usually maintain your current level.
  4. Minimize stress. You may be familiar with the stress hormone cortisol and its “break down” effect on the body. This means it breaks down muscle and bone to help increase blood sugar that a stressed body needs. This tissue breakdown will not only increase your risk of osteoporosis, but also make you gain belly fat. Of course we all have stressful moments in our day, but we need to learn how to unplug and turn off the stress response to prevent this cortisol effect.
  5. Just Do It! Exercise, that is. Particularly the kind that puts weight on the bones, is the final key ingredient for healthy bones. Activities like walking, dancing, biking, and jogging will help build bones and counteract stress.

New York Fashion Week Gets Curvy

Crystal Renn 300x210 New York Fashion Week Gets CurvyStick-thin sample size models won’t be the only ones gracing the runways at New York Fashion Week. Thanks to OneStopPlus.com, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week will host its first ever plus-size only runway show.

America’s Next Top Model alumni Toccara Jones will be one of the models as will Lizzie Miller who famously showed off her beautiful and very real body in Glamour.

Though the OneStopPlus.com show will be the first to feature all plus-sized models, other designers have welcomed fuller figures into their shows. Marc Jacobs, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Chanel have all welcomed more realistically sized models into their shows.

It’s a thrilling change as most plus-sized models are actually healthy, average sizes. Gorgeous stunner, Crystal Renn, is a size 10. Whether you actually covet the high-end designs that are stomped down the runways or not, you have to admit that fashion has a big impact on our society. And repeated images of super-thin models can create an unrealistic weight goal for many girls and women.

Health doesn’t come in a size two. We should all strive for a physically active lifestyle and incorporate good, balanced nutrition into our lives. When we live healthfully, our bodies will be healthy in return.

Genetics Don’t Determine Everything

mother and daughter sitting back to back 42 22329828 300x209 Genetics Dont Determine EverythingHave you ever been compared to your mother?  Everyone says I’m the spitting image of mine.  Each year photos are taken out and everything from my eyes to my smile is compared to her at different stages of her life.  It’s flattering to say the least, but determining how you look when you get older isn’t as simple as taking a look at your mom.

While genetics play a role in your body shape, you’re really in the driver’s seat.  Our mothers grew up during a time when it wasn’t as popular to partake in after school sports or physical activity.  They also weren’t likely dieting and exercising as much as people do now.  Today, we can even have prepared meals delivered to our homes to ensure we’re eating healthily and the right portion size.

While genetics do set a base line weight, your choices are ultimately more influential. The way you live your life –- environmental and personal choices –- will have a tremendous impact on your body shape.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder: Symptoms of Extreme PMS

1142.Pregnant 300x225 Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder: Symptoms of Extreme PMSCramps, back aches and irritability are the most common symptoms of PMS, but there are over 150 different symptoms that women experience each month – some more than others.  If you’re lucky, you only suffer from them for about two days, but a select few deal with PMS for up to two weeks.

“Some women have premenstrual symptoms that are severe enough to disrupt their personal relationships or interfere with their normal daily activities,” commented Dr. Donnica Moore.  The number is only eight out of 100, but the level of discomfort is not to be overlooked.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe form of PMS that occurs about a week prior to your period.  Many take it too lightly and mistake it for common irritability, but for the few women who suffer from PMDD, it needs to be taken seriously as the symptoms are psychological.  From anxiety and depression to difficulty sleeping and anger outbursts, a person suffering from PMDD needs medical attention.

Unlike PMDD, PMS can be managed – as women who lead unhealthy lifestyles tend to have worse symptoms.  If you suffer from horrible PMS, try cutting caffeine, quitting smoking, exercising, limiting alcohol and chocolate and getting more sleep.  All of these things will help to alleviate the symptoms and over time, make you less irritable.

FDA Approves New Morning After Pill

ellaone 300x294 FDA Approves New Morning After PillThere’s a new emergency contraceptive on the market that gives women who have unprotected sex more time to get to the pharmacy.

Introducing ellaOne – a new morning after pill that will prevent pregnancy for up to five days.  With a prescription, ellaOne has been available in Europe and is often compared to Plan B.  Plan B however, only works within three days of having unprotected sex.

Researchers studied the effectiveness of both pills and found women who took ellaOne within five days had a 1.8% chance of getting pregnant, whereas women who took Plan B had a 2.6 chance.  It is believed that this could be because ellaOne delays ovulation and Plan B contains synthetic progesterone, which interrupts the early stages of the eggs development.

Even though there is an allotted amount of time after having unprotected sex to take the pills, it’s encouraged to take one as soon as possible to prevent pregnancy.

Study: Women Are Sexier When Ovulating

600 01694347n 209x300 Study: Women Are Sexier When OvulatingUnless you’re trying to get pregnant chances are you’re probably not consciously paying too much attention to your cycle, but research shows your actions are.

During ovulation (mid cycle) women are known to purchase sexier clothing and take better care of themselves in a “survival of the fittest tactic.”  Researchers at the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management found that despite evolution, we’re still behaving the same.  Because of the increased levels of estrogen and testosterone during this time, women tend to feel most desirable and therefore put themselves out there in a “look at me, I’m sexier than her” type of way.

“In order to entice a desirable mate, a woman needs to assess the attractiveness of other women in her local environment to determine how eye-catching she needs to be to snare a good man,” Kristina Durante, a post-doctoral fellow at the Carlson School, stated.  Therefore, she’ll spend and invest in material goods and herself to compete without realizing what she’s doing.

While this may be great for the cosmetic and fashion industry, it definitely takes a toll on your funds.  It would be interesting to take a look at your credit card statement and check which days out of the month you’re a frequent swiper!

Boost Your Body Image

SCLY 2 Boost Your Body ImageThere are days when I feel all-around good about my body and in my clothes — and don’t even mind being in a bikini.  Then there are the days – the dreaded days – where I look in the mirror and can’t stand what I see. Nothing I try on looks good and I make myself feel so horrible that I end up being in a bad mood for the rest of the day.  It’s amazing what your body image can do to your mood.

When it comes to body image, it doesn’t matter what others see or what kind of compliments you receive from outsiders, the only eyes that truly matter are yours and that voice inside your head is the only one that counts.  Therefore, it’s important to be able to boost your own body image so you can feel confident and look at yourself the way others see you.

Besides changing your attitude, start doing yoga.  In a study published in the Psychology of Women Quarterly, researchers found that women who did yoga were more satisfied with their appearance than those who only did aerobic exercises or didn’t work out at all.  Yoga helps to tone and lengthen the muscles so this isn’t surprising.  The study also found that most of these women participated in other forms of exercise throughout the week and were body confident.

Since yoga connects the mind, body and spirit, you leave a class feel physically and mentally conditioned.  Next time you’re feeling a little less than body confident, hit the mat.  Feeling good about yourself pays off — and it shows on the outside!

For Many Women, Bald is Beautiful

Miss America finalist – Miss Delaware, Kayla Martell, suffers from a disease called alopecia areata, which caused her to lose all of her hair and instead of covering it up, she’s embracing her baldness and showing off her true beauty.  This is a reminder that as much as going bare up there is a trend right now, it’s also a medical condition — on which icons like Martell who give others courage to embrace it.

Recently, during the Spring/Summer 2011 fashion shows, models for the Patrick Mohr show in Berlin wore bald head pieces re-establishing the trend.  As much as it can be seen as a trend for some, it’s a lifestyle for others.
