Gloss How-To: Fit in Fitness on Your Commute

When you’re constantly shuffling between work and home commitments, it can seem nearly impossible to fit in fitness. But when your schedule is really packed, the best spot for fitness might just be literally between work and home. When you run, walk or bike to work you not only do a favor for your personal fitness, you’re doing the environment a solid, too.
- If you live close enough to walk, bike or run to work time out your self-powered commute on a non-work day. You don’t want to be late!
- If you live too far, consider parking your car farther from the office or getting off the bus or subway a stop or two early. Even if you have a long commute, you can still fit in fitness.
- Remember that you may need a change of shoes and/or clothes and you’ll probably need a little time to freshen up before work (you don’t want to go through the whole day with bike helmet hair). Either keep the items you’re going to need at work or bring them with you in a backpack.
- Keep safety in mind. If any part of your commute is in the dark make sure to stay in safe areas and wear reflective gear. Also, weather can cause safety issues so play it safe and smart — there are some days when you probably shouldn’t hoof it to the office.
In addition to the fitness and environmental benefits, you’ll find that your active commute gives you time to plan for the work day ahead and slough off any stress from the day before you get home.
