The gentle, non-stressful movements combine with meditation and promote relaxation, balance and muscle control. A recent study suggests tai chi helps ease fibromyalgia pain.

Fibromyalgia is a condition associated with chronic pain and fatigue. Affecting an estimated 5.8 million Americans, middle-aged women are the hardest hit. Aching joints, sore muscles, tenderness and feeling tired are the hallmark symptoms of this life-altering disease.

The small Tufts University study followed 66 fibromyalgia patients. Some participants followed a tai chi program for 12 weeks, while others took a wellness class and completed stretching exercises. Participants who did tai chi reported significant improvements in pain, mood, sleep, quality of life and exercise capacity. Non-tai chi participants reported little change in their fibromyalgia symptoms.
