Gloss Find: Kali Wrap Top

Samtosa Gloss Find: Kali Wrap TopIf you’re just running straight to the gym and then right back home, basic workout gear is fine. Gloss Find: Acushakti Mat

meditationmat 300x176 Gloss Find: Acushakti MatAlthough services were offered, I’ve never gotten acupuncture before because the thought of someone sticking needles into my body to relieve pain and stress seems like an oxymoron.  As a victim of migraines it’s been recommended to me, but I still don’t want to go down that road.

Known for treating over 28 conditions, the Chinese herbalists have to be on to something so when I was introduced to a meditation mat that mimicked the treatment I was curious to test it out.  The Acushakti Mat is small and portable with tiny plastic spikes on one side that hit over 6,000 acupressure points.  When I first laid on it, I jumped up quickly because I was surprised by the way they stuck into my back.  However, once I positioned myself more comfortably and laid down slowly onto the spikes, I allowed them to sink into my skin and with a few deep breaths, I was at ease – pain is pleasure, right?

Lying on the mat for 20 minutes at a time regularly encourages your body to release endorphins and relax.  I now like to lay on it after I unplug and right before I go to bed.  It helps me unwind and have a more restful sleep.  Recommended for people who have muscle stiffness, stress or anxiety and back pain, the Acushakti Mat is a simple fix.

Gloss Find: Taga Bikes

taga Gloss Find: Taga BikesExercising when you have little kids isn’t easy. It’s not as if you can hire a sitter every time you want to go out for a run. So, while moms and dads can certainly trade off, fitness gear that keeps kids in mind is a welcome addition to the family.

After seeing a photo of Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott riding Taga Bikes, I just had to check it out. Simply put, the Taga Bike looks cool. I love that your child rides in the front, within your sight. And the tripod design looks as if it would be more stable and safe when carrying a child. But that’s not all. The Taga is convertible and changes into a stroller.

This isn’t a product I’ve tried out. For one, I can’t afford it. And two, I don’t think my five foot tall, 88 pound 13-year-old would be too keen on riding in a carrier. But I’m a fan of any innovative product that brings fitness to the family. Even when your kids are as young as Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott’s are, setting an example of a healthy and active lifestyle is a good idea. Kids who grow up with fitness as a regular part of their day are more likely to keep up the healthy habit into adulthood.

Gloss Find: Under Armour Catalyst Hoody

UnderArmour Gloss Find: Under Armour Catalyst HoodyFootball season is starting soon. Even though it’s hotter than you know what outside right now, I have vivid memories of shivering under a blanket during last year’s fall games. I went to Under Armour® to order one of their fitted shirts for my son to wear under his uniform. Out of curiosity, I took a peek at their women’s apparel, too. Now UA has always been a staple for my son’s athletic gear, but for me … not so much. To the dismay of my poor, aching credit card, I found several items I wanted. I’m particularly excited about my UA Catalyst Hoody.

The hoody is part of the UA Green Collection — performance fabrics made from recycled plastic bottles. How cool is that? And I’m hoping that the long sleeves, but lighter performance fabric will be perfect for when I’m walking around the high school campus while my son’s football team is practicing. (His 1.5 hour practices are a perfect opportunity for an interval walking workout for me — and I can usually wrangle another parent or two into joining me.)

UA Catalyst Hoody — $44.99 on UnderArmour.com.

Gloss Find: Yantra Mat

Yantra Gloss Find: Yantra MatI’ll admit it. I was skeptical. Though I know of people that have had good results with acupuncture or acupressure, I’ve never tried it myself. And the Yantra Mat with its 8,820 little plastic spikes looked anything but comfortable to me. The Yantra Mat is an acupressure therapy mat that’s supposed to help relieve stress, soothe back problems, increase energy and even help you sleep better. That all sounds great in theory, but all I could think was “ouch.”

When my sample Yantra Mat arrived in the mail I read through the information pamphlet with more than a little hesitancy. Though I loved the cute carrying case and the mat is clearly well made, I wasn’t at all excited about lying down on this thing.

Being a newbie, I placed a sheet over the mat before lying on it as the instructions recommended. I popped in my ear buds and prepared to relax for the recommended 10 minutes (you’re supposed to build up the time you spend on the mat, starting with a short 10 minutes). Surprisingly, I didn’t experience any of the discomfort the pamphlet said I might feel at first. Then again, I had it in my head that this was going to be out and out painful, so maybe any minor discomfort paled in comparison to my worry about it. By the end of the 10 minutes, I was about to drift off to sleep. I can’t say I was necessarily stressed out when I started the session, but I was in the middle of my work day and my brain had been working a mile a minute. I actually felt relaxed and at ease.

But there are many ways to use the Yantra Mat and I was anxious to try another position. I placed the Yantra Mat on my desk chair and went back to work. After about 30 minutes I removed the mat (which I had forgotten about completely). Sitting on the mat was so incredibly comfortable and there was truly a marked difference in how my back felt.

I can’t say how effective the Yantra Mat would be for serious back pain or injury-related issues. I’d check with your doctor before using it in those conditions. But I’m pleasantly surprised by my Yantra Mat. There’s something undeniably relaxing about those little plastic spikes. I have a feeling I just met 8,820 new “friends.”

Gloss Find: Stuffitts Shoe Savers

stuffitts Gloss Find: Stuffitts Shoe SaversMy 13-year-old son is a runner and he has a habit of coming all the way into the living room before kicking off his shoes post-run. There are a lot of scents that I like to have in my living room — vanilla candle or furniture polish for example — but 13-year-old sweaty feet are not on my list of desired fragrances.

Stuffitts Shoe Savers are designed to save athletes from the odor we all know and don’t love. The inserts are in two pieces: an outer shell made of technical fabric that helps wick moisture out of your shoes, and the inner core that’s filled with pleasant-smelling cedar. You can forget about using crumpled newspaper to soak up moisture after a hot or wet run, Stuffitts does the job in less time.

Using Stuffitts has really saved my son’s shoes (and the smell of my living room). After using the Stuffitts we simply hang them over our basement clothes line and let them naturally air dry. The outer shell can be removed and washed just like any other technical fabric.

Stuffitts Shoe Saver — $24.95 on Stuffitts.com.

Gloss Find: fitbook & fitbook jr.

fitbook001 2T Gloss Find: fitbook & fitbook jr.Setting fitness goals is one thing, but sticking to them and achieving your plan is another.  I find that when I write down what I eat I tend to steer clear of junk food because I feel guilty actually admitting to myself that I ate it and hate to make the confession in my food journal.  Keeping a log of your exercise and meal plans is a great way to get on track and keep yourself motivated – most who do this reach their final goal.

Introducing Fitbook – a 12 week fitness and nutrition journal that makes it easy to keep your eye on end result.  It encourages you to set an overall goal as well as weekly goals that keep you in line with achieving your overall plan.  Throughout the 12 weeks, there are strength training and food log charts that make it easy for you to track your progress.  It’s just the right amount of discipline for someone who needs an extra little push.  The best part– there’s no counting calories or strict diet regimen.  Logging what you eat and how you exercise makes you more aware of how hard you’re working at your goal, making you more likely to achieve it.

For those of you with little ones at home, you may want to consider the Fitbook Jr. Using the same concept as the Fitbook, the Fitbook Jr. is child friendly filled with colors and uses smiley faces as rating systems making it easy for children to fill out on their own.
