Geeks Ordered to Stop Calling Unicorn “The Other White Meat”

canned unicorn meat Geeks Ordered to Stop Calling Unicorn The Other White MeatIn what appears to be my favorite news story ever, the National Pork Board recently issued a cease-and-desist warning to ThinkGeek.com (love them) for touting a fake canned unicorn meat product as “the new white meat”.

Created as an April Fool’s joke, ThinkGeek’s Canned Unicorn Meat product reads “Caviar is so 1980s. Unicorn is the sparkling, crunchy, savory meat of today’s elite” and is described as being an “excellent source of sparkles”.

The board is aware that unicorns don’t actually exist, “But,” said Ceci Snyder, vice president of marketing for the National Pork Board. “if you don’t respond, you are opening your trademark up to challenges.” The board has used their “Pork: the other white meat” slogan since 1987.

After receiving the 12-page letter from the board’s law firm, Scott Kauffman, President and CEO of Geeknet Inc., ThinkGeek’s parent company, quickly offered a public apology saying, “It was never our intention to cause a national crisis and misguide American citizens regarding the differences between the pig and the unicorn. In fact, ThinkGeek’s canned unicorn meat is sparkly, a bit red, and not approved by any government entity.”

To make good on its apology, ThinkGeek is extending a special $10 discount (on any order $40 or more) to “everyone offended by the portrayal of Unicorn Meat as “the new white meat” from now until June 30.

Interestingly, the board did not raise concerns over any of the website’s 20+ pork-related products, which include bacon soap, bacon-flavored envelopes and a “Mr. Bacon’s Big Adventure” board game. “Ironically, other than the Pork Board, we do more than anybody else to promote pig consumption among geeks,” Kauffman said.

National Pork Board – smart move or should they just leave the geeks alone?

So is Scott Kauffman a retarded moron or does he just come across as one?
