geekGIRL: Our Interview with Tech Expert & TV Host, Katie Linendoll

geekGIRL is a new regular feature that highlights the most amazing, brilliant, bold and of course, fabulous women who are making a splash in the tech world and inspiring others to proudly let their geek flag fly.  So for our inaugural geekGIRL profile, it only made sense that we chat with Katie Linendoll: tech expert, Emmy Award winner and PEZ enthusiast (according to her website).

Possessing both style and substance, she feels just as natural striking a supermodel pose for the camera as she does appearing on CNN, where she’s a regular guest commentator.

By 14, she had already built a computer from scratch. At 18, she was enrolled at a top tech school (Rochester Institute of Technology) where she earned a degree in Information Technology New Media while moonlighting as the host for ESPN2’s SportsZone.

After graduation, Katie spent two years as HSN’s resident “Chic Geek” before blogging for Oprah.com and co-hosting the Emmy-nominated A&E series “We Mean Business”, where she and her team dispensed expert know-how to struggling small businesses.

Smart, informed, and totally down-to-earth, Katie found a moment to share what she digs about being a “geek”, her favorite tech trends and what the heck a “garbage plate” is.

geekGLOSS: Have you found it to be especially difficult to be both feminine and taken seriously within your field? It seems like women in tech usually have two options: to be frumpy yet brilliant, or written off as a woman who cares more about her shoes. Do women in tech have to sacrifice their style and sexiness in order to play ball with the boys?

Katie Linendoll: I think we are starting to outgrow this a bit. I personally never think about it.  I’m a total techie, but love to be stylish and girlie whenever I want without a thought.  I definitely know when I am being prejudged based on my look and style and I love to flip that person’s mind.

gG:Do you think products like pink computers or rhinestone-encrusted mouse give female consumers what they want or somehow play into a stereotype?

KL: I think some girls like them, but they personally drive me nuts.  I hope we move away from the “pink stigma”.  My iPod Touch, iPad and laptop are skinned with robots and lasers.  However, while I’m not exactly trying to get any piece of tech Bedazzled – I will take some custom ColorWare any day. Big difference.

gG: Any advice for those who are totally intimidated by technology?

KL: I constantly find that some techies make it way more confusing than it should be.  I try to give suggestions of electronics, gadgets and websites to non-techies that really can help make their lives easier. (retailmenot.com, flip camcorder, external hard drives, et cetera).  I think a lot of stuff out there is extraneous to the average user and seeing the bombardment of products these days can be overwhelming to them.

gG: As a co-host on A&E’s “We Mean Business”, what did you find to be the biggest issue or mistakepeople had/made as far as technology?

KL: A majority of our ‘clients’ did not back up any of their data.  A lot also said “I don’t know the IT guy handles that” to a lot of basic computer questions.  I encouraged them to better understand what they were handing over.  Also, I felt a lot of businesses that we had to makeover did not have good websites.  This was critical for some that had the potential to do way better business online.

gG: You began your on-air career as the host of SportsZone on ESPN2, while still in college. How did that come about? Until now, I thought the idea of a computer geek who’s also a sports buff was just an urban legend!

KL: SportsZone launched my career.  I auditioned when I was in college for the show and one thing lead to another.  I became fascinated with editing and putting together pieces and eventually worked for ESPN in the production department later, winning an Emmy for work on SportsCenter before going back to on-air stuff.  This really helped me be a better host.  The media world has always fascinated me from every angle.

gG: I have a ton of friends who attended RIT and spoke often of the “garbage plates”. Can you explain?

KL: Yes, garbage plates from Tahous were a college staple.  Cheeseburger, home fries, mac salad smothered in ketchup, mustard and hot sauce.  The grease usually soaked through to your clothes and not to mention you hated yourself the next morning.  I think we figured out at one point that each plate had over 50grams of sat fat deliciousness in them.  It was equivalent to smearing some Crisco on your thighs but so worth it.

gG: What are 5 things a geekGIRL should never be without?

KL: Flip camcorder, LED umbrella, external hard drive, iPad, oxford shoes, LED alarm clock app, Polaroid Pic 300 camera.

gG: What new technology has excited you most in recent months?

KL: Phones.  They have become our most powerful device since we have them on us 24/7.  Models like the EVO, iPhone4, Droid X and Droid Incredible are totally breaking barriers.

gG: What does “Geek Chic” mean to you?

KL: It means the ability to be simultaneously geeky and stylish. Geek is now trending!  It’s so weird to open up catalogs and see big wired glasses, oxford shoes, bobby pins, etc.  I always wonder; “Does that make me cool?” …and then quickly realize “Probably not,” but I’ll keep living the dream in my mind.

gG: What geekGIRL you look up to?

KL: Erica Hill.  I think she is brilliant, funny, quick and articulate.

gG: Fill in the blank: “I knew I was going to be a geek when ______…”

KL: I had every gadget since I was little.  If it had a button, lit up or was totally extraneous, it was mine.  I was an early adopter since I could walk haha.
Also, I was the only girl in all my high school networking programs and the only female in 95% of my college classes (IT degree).  I reveled in that glory.

Study: 1 in 4 Women, Half of Parents are Gamers

wii1 300x231 Study: 1 in 4 Women, Half of Parents are GamersAccording to a recent survey by the Entertainment Software Association, 40 percent of video gamers in North America are women and half of all parents play video games with their children at least once a week.

The report also shares other findings like the number of American households who game (67 percent), the average age of game players (34 years old), and the average age of game buyers (40 years old).

The numbers may surprise some, considering video games are thought to be targeted at most teenage boys but the female gaming population is gaining, even outnumbering boys in some cases – women over the age of 18 represent a third of all gamers, outnumbering the 20% of boys 17 or younger. Women also account for almost half of the games-buying public and the 42% who play online.

Despite the violent first person shooter, Call of Duty 2 claiming the top spot, families are enjoying good, clean fun – 13 of the top 20 bestselling video game titles of 2009 were rated “E for Everyone”, 11 of those were for the Nintendo Wii or DS.

Parents with kids under 18 played video or computer games cited fun for the entire family, requests from the kids to play, and an opportunity to bond as the top reasons for joining in.

Gloss Find: XShot Camera Extender

xshotpictureframing 300x225 Gloss Find: XShot Camera ExtenderWho hasn’t taken a terribly awkward photo at arm’s length or missed out on being in a group shot because you had to act as photographer when a helpful stranger could not be found? The XShot Camera Extender was created with the idea that “you deserve to be in the picture, too”. If you’re the type that captures every possible Kodak moment, XShot’s nifty gadget will definitely be your new must-have.

It’s a simple concept: a long rod that attaches to your camera so you can take self-portraits from afar without having to ask a stranger. But the XShot is a souped-up version, designed with lots of features that are surprisingly pretty darn cool.

A lightweight, retractable metal rod, the XShot can extend up to as much as 37″ but only measures 9″ when closed, making it compact enough to put in your purse or carry by the lanyard/handle. The adapter at the end fits all compact digital cameras and rotates 180 degrees for easy adjusting. An easy-to-turn screw locks the camera in place, and the durable metal construction and non-slip grip protects against any unfortunate accidents, even if your camera is a bit heavier.

It’s super easy to use: just screw the adapter into the base of the camera and adjust to your desired position, no extra components or tools are required. Then just set the timer, extend the XShot and say “cheese”. You might feel a bit dorky the first time you use it (I did) but you’ll quickly get over it once you see how well it really works. (Extra bonus: it’s a great conversation starter!)

My testers and I took tons of photos and aside from the terrible lighting and occasional blink, they were a success. Even with the extra length, it was relatively easy to guesstimate where to hold the camera and not cut anything off in the shot. One tester in particular was very nervous about the idea of his new camera sitting precariously on the tip of a 3 ft rod but after tightening the adapter and feeling the sturdiness of the construction, he eventually felt comfortable enough to where his heart didn’t stop each time a photo was taken.

iPhone users will also get a kick out of it. Taking advantage of the iPhone’s photo capabilities, XShot also offers a unique built-in tripod mount (sold separately) that is easily snapped on and can be used for any tripod or monopod, including the adjustable mini version that comes with it.

The mini tripod was actually a huge hit by itself because of it’s super-bendy, spider-like legs. We even used it to record the video for the geekGLOSS Dolce Gusto review. Currently, it’s only available as part of the iPhone case kit but should XShot want to sell it separately, they’ll have at least a few guaranteed buyers.

By the end of our photo session, my team of skeptical ‘we’re too cool to stand here with this crazy thing’ testers were all XShot converts. ”No matter where you are in Disneyland, there’s always an employee who’s offering to take your photo for you,” said one, “This is like that, which is cool.” A gadget compared to the happiest place on Earth – who knew?

The XShot Camera Extender and XShot iPhone Case are $29.95 each on xshotpix.com.

Apple iPhone Round-Up and the Cool New OS 4

software iphone third col 20100607 137x300 Apple iPhone Round Up and the Cool New OS 4Were you one of the 1.7 million people who have picked up the new Apple iPhone 4 (despite the pre-order fiasco) since its release last Thursday?

Hopefully, your phone isn’t plagued with any of the reported glitches like yellow spots, camera issues or weak reception/dropped calls when the phone is held a certain way. Apple acknowledged the reception issue in a statement sent to PC Magazine but suggest that users “avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.”

MORE on GLOSS: iPhone 4 Cases to Fit Every Style

There’s currently a petition that demands Apple either fix the design flaw or give customers free iPhone bumpers but it looks like a real solution for the reception issues could arrive as early as this week, with the release of iOS.4.1 software fix.

As of last week, you can download iOS 4 for free at Apple.com – it won’t have the rumored reception fix but still packs tons over 100 cool features for the iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G models including:

-Multi-tasking functions that lets you switch from 3rd party apps seamlessly and easily
-Folders for organizing up to 2160 apps
-a cool ebook reader
-Tap to Focus camera function and 5x digital zoom
-One inbox to rule them all: no more switching back and forth between email addresses
-Cellular on/off so you can use your phone on an airplane worry-free
-Bluetooth keyboard support that lets you pair up your iPhone with a keyboard for easy typing

Another cool iPhone announcement: Google also just released a mobile Google Docs viewer for the iPhone and  iPad that opens PDFs, .ppt,  .doc and .docx attachments that you’ve uploaded to your Google documents list without having to actually download the file. You can check it out by visiting docs.google.com on your iPhone or iPad and selecting the file from your upload list.

Still on the fence about the iPhone 4?? I myself am waiting for the new Motorola Droid X but check out this in-depth review to see what the folks at CNET think.

The TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference is a small non-profit that brings together some of the world’s most inspired thinkers, who are challenged to offer their world-changing ideas and give the talk of their lives. The likes of Stephen Hawking, Al Gore, James Cameron, Bill Gates, chef Jamie Oliver and plenty of incredible women including Jane Goodall, JK Rowling and Kavita Ramdas (Global Fund for Women) are just a few of the brilliant and creative minds who have presented a “TED talk”.

The conference, held twice annually, is sold out a year in advance but luckily for us, TED’s enlightening talks and performances are available online at TED.com and YouTube.

The videos are ingenious, fascinating, beautiful, funny, inspirational and quite possibly life-changing. Here are a few that I highly recommend watching:

11-year old violin prodigy Sirena Huang gives a jaw-dropping, brilliant performance.

Johnny Lee hacks a Nintendo Wii remote to create sophisticated educational tools for schools – interactive white board, multi-touch surface and more.

Maxi Pad-Shaped Mousepad… Really?

me 300x225 Maxi Pad Shaped Mousepad... Really?Just in case carrying around an iMaxi Apple iPad cover wasn’t enough, now there’s the Innokids Sanitary Towel Shaped Mouse Pad so you can proudly display your love for… feminine protection products…? On your desk…?

I happen to think there may be a few things wrong that with statement but apparently the folks at Innokids think the whole “iPad/maxi pad” joke is in no way stale or totally played out.

Snickering aside, I’ve got to hand it to them for keeping it “classy” though – at least they didn’t strive for uh, accuracy, which is more than can be said about iMaxi’s “heavy flow” design.

$10.99 is all it costs to get a “clever” and “great designed” sanitary towel mouse pad of your own.

What do you think about the Maxi Pad Shaped Mousepad?

geekGLOSS Salute: Raise a Smartphone to Alan Turing

alan turing memorial statue in sackville park manchester england 216x300 geekGLOSS Salute: Raise a Smartphone to Alan TuringNo tech geek could go without paying homage to this genius. Last Wednesday, June 23rd would have been Alan Turing’s 98th birthday. Undoubtedly one of most brilliant minds of the 20th Century, he is known as the father of the modern computer, a pioneer in artificial intelligence and a WWII hero for his famous codebreaking work that unlocked the German Enigma codes and led to the Allies’ victory.

Even in 1950, Turing foresaw many problems in computer science. and published his landmark paper “Computer Machinery and Artificial Intelligence”.  He was the first to ask the question, “Can a machine think?” and devised the “imitation test” (now called the “Turing Test”) to measure the intelligence of a machine. The $100,000 prize for passing the Turing Test has yet to be collected but computers are getting close.

Despite the potential for problems, his outlook remained rosy:
“One day ladies will take their computers for walks in the park and tell each other, ‘My little computer said such a funny thing this morning!’”

Sadly, Turing’s life ended on a tragic note. In 1952, he was arrested due to his homosexuality and the man credited by Winston Churchill as the hero who “won the Battle of Britain”, was revoked of his security clearance revoked and publicly humiliated when he was forced to under undergo female hormone injections. Two years later, Alan Turing took his life.

Turing never received full due for his accomplishments during his lifetime because most of his work remained classified but since those reports have been released, we are now finally able to recognize the incalculable impact Alan Turing has had on technology today and for generations to come.

For an accessible video that touches on Turing and his amazing contributions, check out this video “Information Pioneers” from BCS, a tech non-profit.

Geek on.
