Apple To Announce New iPod, iTV at Sept. 1 Event?

4968756 300x267 Apple To Announce New iPod, iTV at Sept. 1 Event? This morning, Apple invited industry insiders to an exclusive event at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts theater scheduled for Sept. 1, reports Wired. As usual, the invite (pictured left) is slim on the details but rumor has it that Apple is preparing to make some big announcements about Apple TV and upgrades for the iPod Touch, according to multiple reports.

An anonymous Bloomberg source claims that Apple will introduce the new products along with a new iTunes online streaming rental service for television content to directly compete with services like Hulu and Netflix. The new Apple TV, or “iTV” as Bloomberg reports, is described as an “iPhone without a screen” and will be stream content from iTunes — an app store will allow users to download specific shows and channels. The $100 device will have no hard drive so it will require constant broadband connection and will run like the iOS that is on iPhones and iPads.

Industry watchers also predict that the company’s next big move for iTunes will be to take it into the “cloud,” which will enable all iDevices to stream music from a central server. Other announcements to expect? According to Bloomberg’s tipster, Apple will also announce iPhone 4-like upgrades to the iPod Touch that include high-resolution display and dual cameras, as well as an iOS 4 software update for the iPad.

Gloss How-To: Make Phone Calls From Gmail

Google Voicex large 300x200 Gloss How To: Make Phone Calls From GmailUPDATED: Telephone calls to your Inbox? Announced earlier today, Google is launching a Web-based feature that will allow users to place phone calls through their Gmail inboxes.

Working in conjunction with the company’s call forwarding and voicemail service, Google Voice, the phone feature would allow users to make calls to the U.S. and Canada free for at least the rest of the year, and other countries at rates starting at two cents a minute.

With Google Voice users can forward calls to multiple numbers, as well as a computer, set to “ring” for incoming calls. To make a call, click “Call Phone,” in the Chat tab of Gmail. Dial the number on the telephone keypad that will appear and speak using the computer’s microphone. You’ll need to download the voice and video plug-in for it to work.

The new calling feature doesn’t require a Google Voice number but a voice account will let you answer incoming calls from within Gmail, forward calls and to make your computer “ring.” Google’s calling option should be a lifesaver for people with poor cell phone reception at home.

The app is only available in the U.S and according to USA Today, will roll out over the course of the next few days.

Google announced that over the next few weeks, red Google phone booths will pop up on college campuses around the US so people can demo the new Google Voice/Gmail feature.

Also, we mentioned earlier that calls to the US and Canadian landlines will be free through the end of the year, and international calling rates will start at 2 cents a minute — check out Google’s full list of rates here. Credits can be purchased in blocks of $10 to start, with increments of $20 and $50 available soon, and will continue to roll over month to month for a year before expiring.

New California Law Would Make “E-Personation” Illegal

New California Law Would Make E Personation IllegalAimed to dissuade online fraudsters, the California legislature has passed a bill that makes it illegal to impersonate someone else online. Backed by state senator Joe Simitian, the bill hopes to protect both individuals and businesses from online fraud by making malicious “e-personation” a misdemeanor punishable by up to $1,000 in fines and a year in jail.

“Our impersonation laws are long overdue for an update,” said Simitian in a press release. “New laws are needed to crack down on this form of harassment.”

The current law on the books dates back to 1872 and only covers faking someone’s signature, but the new bill extends to Twitter, Facebook and e-mail, and will penalize e-personation done ”for purposes of harming, intimidating, threatening, or defrauding another person.” In other words, someone could not create an embarrassing Facebook or Twitter account with someone else’s name without facing consequences.

However, some critics see the potential for abuse and worry that the bill’s definition of “harm” is too broad. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a non-profit civil liberties group, temporarily impersonating corporations and public officials can be a powerful form of political activism. The group worries that the bill could be used to infringe on people’s First Amendment rights or censor political parodies and is urging Governor Schwarzenegger not to sign it into law.

Simitian says the bill protects free speech by only targeting “credible” impersonators that act without consent, and as the SF Gate points out, “a range of recent incidents have really stressed the question of where to draw the line.”

For instance, students have harassed other kids by assuming the identities of teachers or adults, employees have lost their jobs after a supervisor read something embarrassing written by someone else, and women have even been sexually assaulted after disgruntled ex-boyfriends impersonated them and posted their telephone numbers and home addresses in Craigslist ads soliciting anonymous sex.

The bill, which appears to be the first of its kind in the country, was passed unanimously by both the Senate and the Assembly and now just needs the governor’s signature to signed into law.

Bank of America, Visa to Test Smartphone Payments in NY

Bank of America, Visa to Test Smartphone Payments in NYRemember how we told you about the move by AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless to displace credit cards with smartphones? Now Bank of America and Visa are working to ditch the plastic, too, with mobile payment test programs scheduled to roll-out as early as next month.

New Yorkers will soon get to make payments to merchants with just a wave of a smartphone – Bank of America’s test run program will start September and run through the end of the year.

Visa is planning to roll out a similar test run with US Bancorp in October.

While the pilot program will use microSD cards, Back of America’s trial run will use small chips that testers will insert in their smartphones. The chips communicate directly with point-of-sale devices to process purchases with the user’s bank account data. Customers will make payments just by waving their smartphones near the cash register — no plastic necessary!

According to Bloomberg News, New York City taxis, Walgreens and CVS drugstores, Burger King and McDonald’s restaurants, and Home Depot are all equipped to accept mobile payments.

Mobile payments have been in use in the U.K., Japan, Turkey and South Korea for the past decade, but have yet to take off in the States. But as the number of Americans using smartphones continues to climb, a digital wallet seems to make sense.

Any New Yorkers out there who plan to take part of the trial? If so, we’d love to hear what you think about mobile payments!
