Rather than swiping credit cards, customers would be allowed to pay for goods and services with their smartphones — or so the major wireless carriers hope.
According to a Bloomberg report, mobile carriers AT&T, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile are now in a unified effort to displace the country’s 1 billion credit cards with a payment system that charges purchases to a wireless account by waving a smartphone in front of a reader.
Test runs are planned to take place in Atlanta, as well as three additional cities nationwide. No dates have been announced yet but I’m definitely looking forward to the day when people start asking, ”How will you be paying for this today? Cash or a Jedi Mindtrick-like Wave of Your smartphone?”
