Apple users everywhere will have the chance to make a bold style statement of their own, thanks to a super hot collection by Eley Kishimoto for Incase.

These “patron saints of print” are best known for their catwalk collaborations with Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, and Alexander McQueen, but this fall, Mark Eley and Wakako Kishimoto are teaming up with Incase for a collection of tech accessories designed for the Apple user who appreciates both fashion and technology.

Screen-printed with Eley Kishimoto’s striking graphic print, these statement-making accessories for the iPad, iPhone 4, or MacBook instantly add “Flash” (also the name of the graphic print) to Apple’s starkly hued product line-up. And as if a hot pink option wasn’t enough, design details such as plush faux fur linings further elevate the fabulousness.

“How To Cook Everything” App Teaches You Just That

cookeverything 208x300 How To Cook Everything App Teaches You Just ThatIn what she describes as a “bizarre turn of events that clearly has no logic behind it,” our own chicGLOSS style guru Aly Walansky has been tapped to compete in blogger cook-off, hosted by Better Homes and Gardens. When it comes to fabulous shoes and make-up trends, Aly is our go-to gal but the perfect weeknight recipe? I’m confident her recipe for Fish Tacos with Black Bean Salad should be a hit – Aly is a fish taco connoisseur – but you definitely don’t have to be competing in a media-sponsored cook-off to use a bit of expert advice.

Enter the How to Cook Everything Essentials, the free version of Mark Bittman’s top-rated How to Cook Everything app based on his bestselling cookbook of the same name. Even on its own, the app (available for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) is incredibly useful whether you’re cooking or grocery shopping and includes 100+ basic recipes that Bittman, a longtime New York Times columnist, blogger, and television personality, considers “Essential,” as well as:

*easy-to-use and flexible search capabilities, as well as the ability to browse recipes and reference information

*handy built-in timers throughout the recipe steps

*customizable (and email-friendly) shopping lists making it easy to buy ingredients — and whatever other groceries you need at home

*in-app upgrade capability allows you to easily and quickly upgrade to the complete $1.99 version (includes over 2,000 recipes and 400 illustrations)

*recipe and reference content is embedded in the app, so you don’t need a network connection to use it

So, will the How to Cook Everything Essentials app turn you into an expert chef overnight? Probably not, but after preparing just one of Bittman’s recipes, your friends and family will at least be thoroughly impressed.

Forgo Productivity To Watch Live Zoo Animal Cams

mapview 208x300 Forgo Productivity To Watch Live Zoo Animal CamsWhy should I spend my day working when there are silly penguins that require my utmost attention? Not since the Shiba Inu puppy cam have I been this captivated by the daily, albeit slightly mundane activities of our animal friends.

A virtual “critter cam” and interactive map, the Pocket Zoo features live video feeds of zoo animals from around the world, fun “teacher approved” facts, real photos and sounds, endangered species “survival status” and more.

Eleven of the 40 featured animals can be watched via regularly monitored live cams — to find video of panda bears, elephants, killer whales, tigers and more, simply navigate Pocket Zoo’s animated interface and tap on the animals of interest. A photo feature also lets you take live snapshots that can be saved to your album, or sent to friends via e-mail or Twitter… because spending your entire afternoon watching a panda cam just isn’t enough.

Rest In Peace: Microsoft’s Mock Funeral For iPhone, BlackBerry

Microsoft holds a mock funeral for the iPhone and BlackBerry 300x183 Rest In Peace: Microsofts Mock Funeral For iPhone, BlackBerryHas Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 7 managed to bury the competition already?

With the help of a motorcycle-riding Darth Vader and some “Thriller” zombies, a group of Microsoft employees gave the big kiss-off to the iPhone and BlackBerry on Friday as part of a mock funeral – complete with pallbearers, hearse and bagpiper – planned in anticipation of Microsoft’s forthcoming Windows Phone 7.

Other than inspiring employee optimism and theatricality, the mobile reboot and newly improved OS will hopefully help Microsoft catch up with the more advanced Android and iPhone platforms its been lagging behind. Microsoft will reportedly have a formal unveiling as well as showcase a number of other Windows 7-ready smartphones at a New York press event scheduled for October 11.

While reviews so far have been positive, some argue that the WP7′s success may still be an uphill battle. Despite a more simplistic easy-to-use design and wide array of features including a virtual keyboard, connections to XBox Live and a built-in Zune player, an early CNET review notes that a few essential features such as a copy-and-paste function and decent battery life, are missing.

An exact release date has yet to be announced but if the rumors are true, we’ll have to wait another month to see if Microsoft’s new phone really has what it takes to send the Android and iPhone to an early grave.

LucyPhone Waits On Hold So You Don’t Have To

LucyPhone Waits On Hold So You Dont Have ToThe least fun game in the history of the world? The Waiting Game — especially if it’s played while on hold for a customer service agent. I’m not sure what’s worse – the bad adult contemporary jazz or the repeated assurances that due to “unusual call volumes” a representative be with me shortly? Thankfully there’s LucyPhone, a free web-based service and iPhone app that will doing the waiting for you, then call you back when an actual human being picks up.

To use, head to LucyPhone.com and look up the number of the company you’re calling or add one to the database then input your own number. LucyPhone then calls both you and the company, similar to Google Voice.

You’ll still be able to navigate the phone menu as usual, so the second you hear “please hold,” just press **. Your call will end but LucyPhone will still be on the line, enduring the Muzak and annoying automated messages so you don’t have to.

When a representative does pick up, LucyPhone will ring your phone – pick up and you’ll be connected with the live human being! If you’re put on hold for a second time, just press ** again.

The iPhone app that is available offers the same functionality as the Web service, allowing mobile users to search a database of more than 1,000 numbers or enter a toll-free number to add. Users will also be able to monitor how long they’ve been on hold to see just how much time LucyPhone has been on the line for them. The service doesn’t just save time, battery life or mobile minutes — it also saves your sanity!

Gloss How-To: Use Apple’s “Ping” Social Network on iTunes

itunes101 300x280 Gloss How To: Use Apples Ping Social Network on iTunesSteve Jobs’ bare neck wasn’t the only major unveiling at yesterday’s Apple media event. Revamped iPods, updates for iOS 4.1, an iTunes overhaul and the long-rumored Apple TV were also announced but for me, the presentation for Ping, Apple’s new social network for music, was the most exciting. (Jobs’ missing turtleneck, a close second.)

With Ping, music-lovers can follow their friends and favorite artists to discover what music people are talking about, listening to, and downloading. Users can listen to music recommended by their favorite artists and friends, watch exclusive artist videos, create customized Top 10 playlists and access to more than 17,000 concert listings.

A music-centric “Facebook and Twitter meets iTunes” (as described by Jobs) that updates my feeds with cool music instead people’s Farmville status, and lets you follow your friends and favorite artists? Sounds cool, no? So how do you get started?

MORE on GLOSS: An Overview of the Apple Keynote Event: New iPods, Apple TV, iTunes Social Network

Get iTunes 10

First, you’ll have to install the new iTunes 10 – download it for free at apple.com/itunes. The music service got a huge overhaul with this latest update so don’t be shocked if the new iTunes almost looks unrecognizable. Not only has the iTunes  logo been changed, but your library now includes Hybrid View, a feature that shows album artwork within your playlist. (For some, I’m sure this is a cool add-on but since I lack album art, the feature is more annoying and obtrusive than anything.)

Once iTunes 10 has been installed, open iTunes and find the new Ping link that’s right above your Playlists. If you double click on the link, Ping will pop-out as a separate window, which is helpful if you’re on Ping but want to do stuff in your iTunes library. You’ll be prompted to sign-in using an Apple ID or AOL account – if you don’t have either, you can easily set up an Apple ID for free.

After logging in, you can upload a profile photo and fill-in the basic “About Me” section. To help Ping get a better sense of your musical tastes, click the “Genres I Like” button to choose your top 3 favorites. Your playlists, downloads and songs played in iTunes or on your iPhone/iPod Touch will also be used to help make artist and album recommendations. (This feature will get better once there’s more user content.)

Privacy Settings

Scroll down and you’ll find these privacy settings options:

1. Allow people to follow me. Your activity (including music purchases) would be visible to everyone and anyone can follow you.

1.5. If you allow people to follow, you can choose this option: Require approval to follow me. Your name, photo and where you live will be visible to everyone. Only people you approve will be able to follow you and see complete profile information and activity (including music purchases.)

2. Don’t allow people to follow me. You can follow others but no one can follow you. Your name and photo will appear for some actions, such as writing reviews or adding comments.

You can also scroll down and specify how you want ‘Music I Like’ to be displayed on your profile. Ping is available now on your desktop with iTunes, as well as the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Find Favorite Artists and Friends to Follow

Like Twitter, following your favorite artists and friends on Ping is easy. In iTunes, open ‘Ping’ to see the artists that have been recommended for you follow, based on your playlists and listening habits in iTunes or on your iPhone/iPod Touch. You can also see your favorite artist’s status updates, photos, exclusive videos and even check out what songs they’re listening to lately.

ping Gloss How To: Use Apples Ping Social Network on iTunes

If you know someone already on Ping, use the ‘Search For People or Artists’ function located at the top of the Ping homepage to search for them by name. Invite more friends to Ping by sending email invites, or by connecting to your Facebook account.

Stay Up to Date on Who, What, When and Where with the ’Recent Activity’ Feed

Stay connected with the ‘Recent Activity’ feed, a list of updates showing what friends, artists, and celebrities are up to on iTunes that can be found on your Ping homepage. Find out what others are listening to, who they’re talking about, and what their favorite artists have been up to lately, all on one page. If you want to check up on a specific person, just click on their name to view their recent activities.

Preview 30-second clips of songs recommended by your friends and if you like it, you can download the full version with just a click. Any song or music video on iTunes can also be sent to a friend as a gift, added to your wishlist, or shared on your Facebook and Twitter accounts. To further expand your music tastes and library, you can click on an album to see what other fans are listening to.

“Like” and “Post”

If you do find something cool, share it with your friends and followers by clicking ‘Like.’ You can also recommend a song, album, or friend’s status update – and add comments – with the ‘Post’ button. The ‘Like’ and ‘Post’ options appear in iTunes right below the album image, and on people’s profile page under the Ping menu near the upper left corner,  as well as with the posts and status updates in your Recent Activity feed.

With Ping, the whole artist/fan interaction is pretty cool. For example, one my favorite bands Weezer liked an album by another favorite band — I was able to ‘Like’ it, too, right on their page. Totally silly but also slightly validating… Fans can also leave comments on an artist’s status update, photos or videos. (Once more content is added, this feature will get better!)

Screen shot 2010 09 02 at 7.31.05 AM Gloss How To: Use Apples Ping Social Network on iTunes

Music purchases or reviews that you’ve written will automatically be shared on your feed with everyone who follows you. When you browse the iTunes store, you’ll also be able to see if any of your friends have purchased a song or written a review for the particular album you’re looking at. Another interesting function is “Charts,” which will pull up a brief list of top songs and albums that have been purchased by the people you follow.

Keep in mind that anything you ‘Like,’ ‘Post’ or purchase will show up in your Recent Activity feed for others to see unless you’ve set your profile to be private. (More on this below.)

Find Upcoming Concerts

Whenever you follow an artist, Ping will automatically recommend any upcoming concerts from that artist, and will even tell you which of your friends are planning to go, too. If you want to look for shows for specific artist, click ‘Concerts’ from their artist page in the iTunes Store — 17,000+ have already been posted!

One More Thing…

After installing iTunes 10, I spent a little time on Ping to check it out.  Since it launched yesterday evening, I haven’t accumulated any followers yet but thanks to my usual listening habits, this what my Recent Activity feed would have sent to them if I had any:

Screen shot 2010 09 02 at 2.46.08 AM Gloss How To: Use Apples Ping Social Network on iTunes

I still maintain that Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” is nothing short of awesome but since Ping’s default settings broadcast every ‘Like,’ ‘Post,’ (more on those below) and download to friends and followers, a public mocking would be inevitable, considering the other less meme-y songs on my playlist. So, for those of us who indulge in music’s uh, guiltier pleasures, I’d suggest restricting your profile, being careful when submitting album reviews, and the fact that you own all four of Kajagoogoo’s studio albums - may be best to keep that to yourself…

‘Ping’ Overall

There are a few lackluster elements such as awkward page navigation and a limited number of artists with Ping profiles currently signed up (this will hopefully change though), but once more people join and there’s more user content, Ping could mean major competition for networks like Facebook and Twitter – with or without geo-location services. (Ping currently does not support any location-based services.)

According to Jobs, when Ping launched last night, the service was immediately available to more than 160 million iTunes users in 23 countries! But even with a huge built-in customer base, who knows if it will catch on? (Right, Google Buzz?)

It’s too early to tell since the cooler features of the service require more user content but I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that Ping will be a big success!

Will you be using Ping or have you tried it yet? Ping users: Think this will replace your other social network accounts or will it just be another one on your list? What’s the most embarrassing “guilty pleasure” song you can think of?

Apple Keynote: New iPods, AppleTV, iTunes Social Network

Apple CEO Steve Jobs discusses the features of the new Apple iPod Nano at a news conference in San Francisco Wednesday Sept. 1 2010 300x225 Apple Keynote: New iPods, AppleTV, iTunes Social NetworkUPDATED: Did you check out the live stream of Apple’s music and media event on apple.com? Right now, we’re all rocking (quietly) to a low-key solo performance by Chris Martin of Coldplay. (Pretty appropriate considering Apple used one of their songs in a recent ad campaign.)

While Chris Martin’s solo piano perfomance that closed the  event was less than thrilling (in my opinion) there was plenty more to be excited about as Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced several cool new products and services! Here’s a quick overview:

iOS 4 Updates

iOS 4.1 available next week on the iPhone and iPod Touch. iOS 4.2  for iPhone, iPad and some models of iPod Touch will be out in November. Both will be free downloads on iTunes.

iPods get a makeover!

Shuffle: Think a tiny Nano without the screen. Buttons are back (“People missed buttons,” Jobs says) and Genius playlists will also be added. It also boasts an impressive 15-hour battery life! $49 each, the new Shuffle will be available in 5 colors.

Nano: Think mini Touch. This model ditches the clickwheel for a multitouch screen and will have app support. Almost half the size and weight of the current model, the newly announced Nano is so tiny, it can be worn Shuffle-style. 24-hour battery life! It will cost you $149 for 8GB and $179 for 16GB.

overview hero1 20100901 300x269 Apple Keynote: New iPods, AppleTV, iTunes Social Network

Touch: According to Jobs, this model is now the most popular of all the iPods.  Features include a gyroscope (allows you to change the view by turning the screen), high-res retina display and as predicted, dual cameras and support for Facetime video chat that’s compatible with iPhones, too. The camera will record in HD and includes built-in editing capabilities. There are three iPod touch models: 8GB for $229, 32GB for $299 and a 64GB model for $399.

All new iPods are set to ship in one week.

Ping: “Twitter meets iTunes”

Described by Jobs as a “social media discovery” and “Twitter meets iTunes,” Ping is Apple’s answer to a social network. Centered on music and people who love music, Ping will be integrated into the newly launched iTunes 10 (available for free download at apple.com starting today!) According to Jobs, Ping will be immediately available to more than 160 million iTunes users in 23 countries, givng them a huge advantage right off the bat.

follow20100901 Apple Keynote: New iPods, AppleTV, iTunes Social Network

With Ping, you can “follow” friends or favorite artists. Privacy settings allow you to share your profile/updates with anyone, approved friends only, or what Jobs described as “Circle of Friends” – he gave the example of 10 friends who only follow/share updates with each other.

Some cool stuff: Check out concerts nearby, see what your friends are downloading and listening to, see Top 10 playlists, watch exclusive videos from iTunes artists, view and comment on photos. Ping will be available for iPhone and iPod Touch, too.

Also: Jobs joked that since mp3s on iTunes outsold CDs, Apple’s current CD logo is a bit outdated… so it’s gotten a revamp!

Screen shot 2010 09 01 at 12.15.45 PM Apple Keynote: New iPods, AppleTV, iTunes Social Network

AppleTV

The new reincarnation of Apple TV proves that big things do come in small packages. A quarter the size of the original version, the new Apple TV is also $200 cheaper – only $99!

Jobs explained that customer feedback has told them that people: want watch TV shows and movies in HD, but do not want to worry about syncing anything, use a computer to watch videos or manage file storage.

whatis gallery slide120100901 300x288 Apple Keynote: New iPods, AppleTV, iTunes Social Network

The new Apple TV has an easy plug-and-play design as well as a remote control and Wi-Fi capabilities. Also, thanks to AirPlay, Apple TV will let you stream videos, music, podcasts and photos from a mobile device to TV – in his demo, the movie “Up!” went from iPad to the TV in a split second, without lag! iPads, iPhones and iPod Touch will support AirPlay. Imagine watching a video on your iPhone as you walk through your front door… then with a push of the button, it’s on the TV! Interestingly enough, AirPlay (formerly AirTunes) will also bring users wireless printing capabilites.

All content will be for rental only. HD movies will be $4.99 while (commercial-free!) HD TV shows will be 99 cents each. Jobs confirmed that ABC and FOX are onboard (sorry, “Two and a Half Men” fans) but he hopes that others will join later. He also confirmed that Netflix streaming service will be available, as rumors correctly predicted.

Screen shot 2010 09 01 at 12.30.18 PM Apple Keynote: New iPods, AppleTV, iTunes Social Network

Apple TV will include fun features like a “tomatometer” to check out a movie’s Rotten Tomatoes ratings and support for YouTube, Flickr and MobileMe. Pre-orders start today on apple.com.

So, what do you think about Apple’s latest announcements? Are you excited or less than impressed? And let us know if you download Ping!

Book And Pay For Cab Rides From Your Phone With ‘Taxi Magic’

taxi magic find cab 300x216 Book And Pay For Cab Rides From Your Phone With Taxi MagicBeauty secrets, “Sex and the City” and the appeal of Del Taco weren’t the only topics of conversation during dinner Saturday night with GLOSS’ Lolita Carrico and chicGLOSS editor Aly Walansky. Lolita, the very plugged-in Founder and CEO, also tipped us off to “Taxi Magic,” a must-have app that lets you book a taxi, track its status, and charge the ride to your credit card from your phone.

Long waits and drivers who claim they don’t accept credit card payments can make using a taxi service a frustrating experience. But with the free Taxi Magic app available on iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Palm devices, ‘hailing’ a cab is ridiculously convenient and done with just the push of a button.

Using GPS to determine your general location, Taxi Magic pulls up a list of taxi companies in the area for you to choose from. Once you enter the pick-up address, your request is sent to directly to the company’s routing system, booking a taxi without the need to speak to an operator or wait on hold. Once your ride is dispatched, you’ll receive a message with the driver’s name and how far away he or she is. A map tracks the taxi en route, alerting you when its nearby as well as upon its arrival. Taxi Magic also allows mobile payment using stored credit card info so you never have to pull out cash or actual plastic, and emails the receipt for added convenience.

Non-smartphone users can also book a taxi on the Taxi Magic website or by texting TMAGIC (862442) with the pick-up address (ex: “1658 W. Barry 60657″ or “Bowling Alley Cupertino CA”).

Taxi Magic’s on-demand service is currently available in 45 cities nationwide, including Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco, with plans to expand soon. In New York, local cabs that do not accept electronic reservations due to regulations so Taxi Magic offers competitively priced private car companies as alternatives. RideChange, the company behind the app, also hopes to add more frequent GPS updates for more accurate tracking and features like a user rating system for drivers. Even if the on-demand service isn’t yet available in their city, riders can still use Taxi Magic to find the names and numbers of local cab companies, which can be especially useful for out-of-towners.

The Taxi Magic application is free and available to download on taximagic.com.
