Lady Gaga To Bump Britney Spears As Top Twitter User
Posted on August 20, 2010 by Jennifer Latkiewicz
From one pop princess to another – Lady Gaga is expected to dethrone Britney Spears to become the world’s most-followed Twitter user. according to social media statistics service Famecount.com.
The ”Bad Romance” singer (@ladygaga) was predicted to surpass Spears’ (@britneyspears) count on Thursday or Friday at the latest, but as of this morning, Gaga still lagged a bit behind with 5,657,846 fans to Spears 5,661,202.
Gaga is still the most popular celebrity online, thanks to her Twitter following, 16 million Facebook friends and 330,000 YouTube channel subscribers. But a huge Internet following isn’t the only thing Gaga’s earned – by the time she wraps up her 18-month Monster Ball Tour in April 2011, Gaga is expected to have earned a cool $200 million.
Despite her massive Web presence, Gaga may have to fend off some pop star competition of her own. With Justin Bieber, who already has a following of 4.5 million, adding 800,000 new Twitter followers a month, the teen could pass Gaga within six months, says Famecount.com.
Spears’ reign as Twitter Queen began less than three months ago, when she overtook actor Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk) for the No. 1 spot. She’s currently filming her guest spot on “Glee,” where she has been Tweeting regularly and updating ‘Gleeks’ with news from the set — the Los Angeles Times has a first look here.
