With the July 7th release of the Amazon Kindle DX in Graphite, and the ongoing price wars between Amazon and the Barnes & Noble NOOK, we’ve got a quick rundown on each and even picked our favorite cases — every book needs a cover, right? (Even if they’re digital.)
Amazon Kindle DX
The Amazon Kindle DX ($379) boasts 3G wireless coverage so you can download new titles anywhere in the world and Whispersync technology synchronizes your Kindle library with your computer, iPad or smartphone (Android, iPhone, Blackberry). Measuring at 10.4″ x 7.2″ x 0.38″ and weighing only 18.9 ounces, the 9.7″ high-contrast e-ink screen is ideal for graphic-rich books. The text-to-speech feature enables the Kindle DX to read newspapers, magazines, blogs, and books out loud to you. Kindle users select from a library of over 620,000 books and periodicals – books are downloaded in less than 60 seconds and up to 3,500 books can be stored. Read for up to 1 week on a single charge with wireless on or up to two weeks with the wireless capabilities turned off.

Barnes & Noble NOOK
Unlike the Kindle DX, the Barnes & Noble Nook 3G+Wi-Fi ($199) has a color touch screen for easy one touch control and navigation. The Nook can also be synched to your smartphone, computer etc. but a unique feature allows users to”lend” books to friends and family for up to 14 days at a time. Measuring at 7.7″ x 4.9″ x 0.5″, with a weight of 12.1 oz. and 2GB internal memory (about 1,500 books) – the Nook is a bit smaller than the Kindle. But the Nook has the Kindle beat on expandable memory with a microSD slot (the Kindle DX does not have the option) and size of library – 1 million books at the Nook stores vs. 620,000 on Amazon. Nook also has over 500,000 free ebooks for its users.
