Gloss How-To: Ditch Your Office Cubicle And Go Mobile

working from home 300x225 Gloss How To: Ditch Your Office Cubicle And Go MobileFantasize about taking conference calls from home as you prepare lunch for the kids or leading meetings with clients while lounging on a sandy beach somewhere tropical? If analyst’s predictions are correct, those dreams may be closer to reality than you might think…

By 2013, a third of the world’s workforce will work somewhere other than a traditional office, 119.7 million people in the U.S. alone, according to a study released by IDC earlier this year.

Experts say that the idea of “working from home” is still viewed unfavorably by some but the stigma is changing. Thanks to technologies like cloud computing, supercharged smartphones, and devices with 3G access, a growing number of professionals are ditching cube life for the opportunity to go mobile.

But stigma or not, when it comes to working outside the office, it’s all about results — said one expert, “Study after study shows you’re more productive working from home… I don’t care if you’re doing it in your underwear at 2 in the morning.”

Think your boss will be skeptical of the idea? Play up the benefits of employing people who work from home such as lower health insurance costs and expenses like rent, parking, utilities, etc. When your boss hears how your plan can help the bottom line, hopefully he or she will at least give it a thought. Showcase your stellar ‘problem-solving skills’ and ‘enthusiasm for teamwork’ by offering a few ‘out-of-the-box’ suggestions:

Video Conferencing Tools – Conduct Meetings From Virtually Anywhere

I told you about Google video chat and the latest version of Skype that can accommodate 10-way video calling but there are a few other Web conferencing options that let you connect instantly without having to rely on teleportation.

GoToMeeting Use your computer, phone or iPad to pow-wow with up to 14 of your colleagues. You’ll be able to hear other attendees and respond via the device’s mic or headset. Users can also view slide presentations, spreadsheets, reports, etc. – anything presenters choose to share on-screen.

ooVoo , While ooVoo doesn’t yet support VoIP calling, it does provide video conferencing for up to 6 people and great for those who prefer chat-based meetings. Users can send files, texts, share desktops for collaborations, and record/post HD videos in a private chat room, on Facebook or YouTube. A bit barebones compared to some of the other business software out there, it’s more along the lines of Skype, although ooVoo claims 8 out of 10 users prefer their messaging tool.

Fuze Meeting This feature-rich software lets you host HD Web conferences from your computer, iPad, iPhone, BlackBerry, and any other Wi-Fi enabled or 3G device. Unlike most of its competitors (including GoToMeeting), Fuze allows users to organize meetings from the device (as opposed to a desktop interface) and ‘lag’ is eliminated thanks to a patent-pending synchronization, Fuze says. With options to add Keynote or PowerPoint presentations, Word documents, PDFs, movies, images and any other content stored on the device or in your Fuze library, you can conduct meetings from literally any location with an Internet connection.

There may be monthly fees ranging from $30-$50, depending on how many bells and whistles you need but free, stripped-down versions are also available.

Collaborate As A Team, Eliminate E-Mail Overload with Social Software

There’s no ‘I’ in ‘team’ – even if everyone if scattered across the globe. There’s some cool social software out there that let’s you manage projects and teams efficiently, from virtually anywhere!

Social software also has another major benefit: inbox minimization. Back in the day, business e-mail was a necessary tool but nowadays – not so much. Woohoo, right? Just think of how many ‘quick question’ or ‘yes/no’ e-mails and one-sentence messages clog your inbox on a daily basis. By openly sharing work-related data, notes, questions, etc., you can sharply reduce inbox clutter, and sensitive or confidential information is kept safe, secure and password-protected.

ProjectTurf Whether your team is in another country or the offices next door, you’ll want to check this software out! Collaborate on documents, presentations, or files in real time, add sticky notes, control privacy settings, assign tasks, or use a timer to track what projects are sucking up your time.

Central Desktop Like ProjectTurf, this intuitive software is easy-to-use. Open, save, edit and co-author files stored online in Central Desktop directly from Office, making collaboration on Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files super easy and convenient. Also cool: a Wiki feature for real-time brainstorm sessions, a Forum and “CEO Blog” for general announcements or questions, and “Check out” – a feature that allows users to check out documents (like a library book!) to prevent editing conflicts with another user who may be working simultaneously.

Still Too Many E-Mails?
Gmail users can manage their inbox using Priority, a new feature that splits your inbox into three sections: “Important and unread,” “Starred” and “Everything else.” Gmail or not, grouping e-mails together by category – personal, newsletters/mailing lists, work messages, etc. should help.

Giveaway: Motorola Atrix 4G (AT&T)

I confess, I’m been a little wary of the android world.

atrixatt Giveaway: Motorola Atrix 4G (AT&T)Then again, I too am afraid of the iPhone — so there’s good company in that club.

However, over the last few weeks, I’ve been sent a few androids to review, and I’ve surprised myself – there’s some awesomeness in the lot. I’ll share findings, independently, for each of the phones I’ve been playing with over the last few weeks, but tonight, I want to share a really special one — and a great dad/grad gift time find.

I’m sure you’ve heard of Motorola’s Atrix 4G — it’s pretty awesome — a true superphone that can transform itself into a PC. It’s like the power rangers of technology, and as PC Magazine pointed out in their review, shows how we’ll likely be using our mobile devices in the year 2020.

I first saw the Atrix at CES in Vegas earlier this year — it had all sorts of rad tech specs, but I was super-drawn — like a moth to a flame!) – to the desktop-like computing experience when it is docked.

The handset uses NVIDIA’s dual-core Tegra 2 chipset, has 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a 5MP rear camera with LED flash, a front-facing VGA camera, a fingerprint reader for secure unlocking, and a 4-inch display with a resolution of 960×540.

Anyway, this was all the buzz at CES – everyone was in love with it — fast forward a few months, and you can get it at AT&T for $199 with 2-year contract, $599 without.

The brawn of this baby is the Laptop Dock that uses the Atrix for its brains and storage, plus a standard dock to use the phone as a television set-top box or as a standalone computing device when connected to a monitor. It also has a 5-megapixel camera is fantastic and as good as I’ve seen on just about any phone.

I’d put this in the top 3 android smartphones I’ve seen this year. What are the other two? You’ll see in a few days icon smile Giveaway: Motorola Atrix 4G (AT&T)

Sony Planning to Launch Gaming Smartphone in February

The phone wars keep on packing on the heat.

sonygamephone1 Sony Planning to Launch Gaming Smartphone in FebruaryBloomberg reports that Sony has two new gadgets on the new way. Sony plans to launch an updated Playstation portable handheld gaming device on January 27, which would be called the PSP2. It would succeed the PSP Go portable gaming device, which did not do as well for Sony as planned. (Sorry, but we are DS girls, forever and always.)

Bloomberg also says Sony will launch a smartphone designed for playing video games in February — this we ARE excited about. There was also a report about Sony working on a gaming smartphone in the Wall Street Journal last November. The smartphone would feature a a slide-out controller to play video games!

Goodbye, productivity. Everywhere.

Gloss Find: Luxury Smartphone Handsets By Native Union

Screen shot 2010 10 09 at 7.39.56 AM 300x257 Gloss Find: Luxury Smartphone Handsets By Native UnionI can’t imagine ever trading in my smartphone for one of those corded trimline phones of yesteryear, but I definitely do miss having a headset to cradle on my shoulder. Sure, today’s smartphones may be fancy, but they’re also miniaturized flat squares, which makes talking on them for any extended period of time a pain in the neck – literally. And because I’ll never be fully convinced that I don’t look stupid wearing a Bluetooth earpiece, I am simply dying to get my hands one of these ultra-chic Moshi Moshi Handsets by Native Union.

Sophisticated, modern and luxuriously designed — the Moshi Moshi Collection is how I imagine Chanel would do handsets. But behind the  fabulous high-gloss facade is a cutting-edge device designed with functionality and convenience in mind.

Moshi Moshi handsets are designed to enhance the functionality of your mobile phone — access e-mails, text messages, contacts, etc. mid-conversation. The full-sized ergonomic design helps alleviate stress on your neck, and according to the company, exposure to potentially dangerous mobile phone radiation will be reduced by up to 96%.

The newest designs, MM03 and MM04, come equipped with Bluetooth multipoint technology, which allows you to pair and answer calls on two different devices simultaneously and switch between a conversation on one device to another. Exquisitely designed (of course) — I am totally obsessed with these ‘high style meets high functionality’ accessories.

Get your covet on, too — check out the Moshi Moshi Collection below:

Gloss Find: Duracell Instant Charger For USB Devices

duracell 300x264 Gloss Find: Duracell Instant Charger For USB DevicesNo, it’s not just because of my major Droid envy – my BlackBerry just sucks. Near constant use has sucked its battery dry so I’m lucky if I can get an hour or two of use from a full charge. I tried to deal as best I could but when it died on me the day I had to find a colleague amidst a crowd of 125,000 costumed geeks at Comic-Con, I swore: Never. Again. Enter the Duracell Instant Charger.

Simple, brilliant – in terms of portable chargers, the Duracell’s streamlined, easy-to-use design is perfection. It’s compact, lightweight and unlike other chargers that cost three times as much, the Instant Charger works with any USB-compatible device, including Apple products like iPhones and iPods.

Smartphones, digital cameras, eReaders and more can be charged simply by connecting the Charger using the USB cable (included) or your device cable. (In a test using a G1 phone, the Instant Charger was able to charge it halfway from almost zero power in about an hour.)

With a lightweight and extremely portable design, this pocket-sized charger can be easily tossed into a purse, glovebox or desk drawer as a backup.  An on/off switch helps to conserve power and an indicator light lets users know if the Instant Charger needs to be recharged.

Aside from phones with a lousy battery life, the Duracell Instant Charger is a smart solution for anyone who travels, needs a handy backup just in case, drains their iPod Touch batteries watching videos or playing games, and of course, who can’t get through a workday without needing to recharge.

Oh, and it’s only $26! Like I said — perfection!

Droid X Users: So How Does Froyo Taste?

kims kone 296x300 Droid X Users: So How Does Froyo Taste?Yesterday was a big day for Droid X users – Verizon finally released the anxiously awaited Android 2.2 Froyo update! But now that users have had a taste of Froyo’s new enhancements including improved Web browsing capabilities and the much-hyped Adobe’s Flash support, the rest of us want to know: Was it worth the wait?

Depends who you ask… Two commentors reported that their devices crashed to the point where Verizon is sending replacements but for the most part, the Froyo updates went relatively smoothly. Some users experienced a slowdown in the system, either during the download or as the phone rebooted, but the lag was only temporary.

It’s still too early for a final verdict but GLOSS’ own Lolita Carrico says she’s thrilled with the Android 2.2. update thus far. While Froyo has improved her phone’s efficiency and overall performance, the battery life has been worse since the update. “But,” she says, ”I’m willing to sacrifice battery life for speed and function.”

Experiencing an error during your update? According to Verizon, just remove and re-insert the battery and power the device back on. The device will power back on with original software and will prompt you again to install the system update.

Commentors Mitch and Daniel P. had their phones freeze or go black but after a battery pull (or four), their Droids were up and running again – and faster than before. But if you’re still having problems, you can contact Verizon support at 1-800-922-0204.

Motorola’s Droid X isn’t the first smartphone on the market that runs Android 2.2. With the update, Droid X is finally on par with the bestselling Droid 2, which was shipped with version 2.2. Froyo comes with a slew of features and enhancements but here are a few highlights:

Adobe Flash Player - The iPhone’s loss was the Android’s gain. With Flash 10.1, you can watch videos, play games and view multimedia Websites just as you would on a computer.

Automatic App Updates While my BlackBerry treats me to a “updated version now available!” message every time I open Twitter, Droid X users won’t miss a beat thanks to automatic app updates through the Android Market.

App Storage on Memory Cards A common (albeit minor) complaint I’ve heard about Droids is that users are required to store apps on the phone’s memory, which can slow its performance down. But with Froyo, you’ll have the option to store them on a memory card instead.

Droid X users, we’d love to hear you weigh in on! What are your thoughts so far about Froyo?

Froyo, Finally: Download Android 2.2 For The Droid X Today!

droid x froyo 2.3.15 Froyo, Finally: Download Android 2.2 For The Droid X Today! You would almost think it was Christmas morning for Droid X owners, considering all the excitement surrounding the latest Android update but the wait is finally over — the Android 2.2 Froyo update is officially available today!

MORE on GLOSS: Move Over iPhone 4 – Meet the Droid X

Packed with a ton of cool features like Flash 10.1, the highly anticipated Android 2.2 update has me suffering from a major case of Droid envy. Other enhancements include:

- Improved web browsing, thanks to pre-installed Adobe Flash 10.1 and faster JavaScript engine

- 720p video recording

- Easy switch between the eight most recently used applications

- Automatic application updates through the Android Market

- New and improved Google Maps

- Improved connectivity to Exchange server and Exchange ActivSync e-mail notifications

- Transition from 3G to WiFi without losing data connection

- Option to install apps on the SD card

- Improved 3G Mobile hotspot support, allowing users to connect laptops or any other Wi-Fi enabled devices.

- Visual Voicemail updates, including simple set-up, improved notifications, and updated display features

- Not part of the update itself, Droid X users running Froyo can download the new Gmail app from the Android Market. Unveiled on Tuesday, the standalone version of Google’s Gmail app is not tied to the Android OS and includes a limited version of its new Priority Inbox feature.

TO DOWNLOAD: The Froyo update will be pushed out over the air but users can also download it manually by going to Menu > Settings > About  > System Updates.

This update finally brings the Droid X up to par with the Droid 2, which arrived a few weeks ago pre-loaded with Froyo, making it the only phone on the market (at the time) with usable Flash available. Both the Droid X and Droid 1 follow-up, Droid 2, caused a frenzy when they were launched earlier this summer, selling out almost instantly and quickly becoming Verizon’s two bestsellers. The next hotly anticipated Droid is the limited edition R2-D2 Droid, scheduled to go on sale September 30.

It’s only been an hour or so since the update was made available so it’s too soon to say whether or not there are any major issues. Are you a Droid X user? Have you downloaded Froyo yet? Let us know in the comments!
