Make sure to look for a super-safe kid’s lunchbox, as there may be more horrors lurking than you thought of!
We love the lunchboxes from Citizen Pip (pictured). They’re BPA and lead-free and come with a variety of safe reusable containers, flatware, even flasks — plus, their designs are adorable. BPA and lead aside, you also need to make sure that your lunchbox doesn’t contain Microban, which is the trade name for a dangerous pesticide called Triclosan. Triclosan is ostensibly antimicrobial, however, it’s never proven to reduce illness in any way, shape or form. Additionally, Triclosan is a known hormone disruptor that has been banned in Canada. Microban can also come under the trade names of: Irgasan, Biofresh, Lexol-300, and Ster-zac – so read your labels! It can also be found in other school supplies too.
If you’re worried about bacteria, it’s much better to spritz lunch boxes with my make-at-home Gorgeously Green All-Purpose Spray at the end of everyday.
What about anti-bacterial wipes? They too can contain Triclosan – so look for non-toxic hand sanitizers such as the Method Hand Sanitizer. I love this one, as it comes in a large bottle. Save money by decanting it into a small travel bottle to put in your kid’s lunchbox.
