Duggar Family: Why So Many Duggar Haters?

jim bob michelle duggar 300x208 Duggar Family: Why So Many Duggar Haters? What’s the deal with all the Duggar haters?  The TLC series about the Duggar family, 19 Kids and Counting, is very popular.

But many have strong opinions about the Duggar family!  People either love the family with 19 children or they have very negative feelings toward the Duggars.  A recent PETA ad targeted the Duggar family for a campaign to  support spaying and neutering of cats and dogs.  The ad said “Doggies are Multiplying Faster Than Duggars”. PETA Executive Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch defended the ad:

The Duggar kids will probably never need to worry about having a roof over their heads or food in their mouths, but the millions of unwanted cats and dogs born each year in this country aren’t as lucky. The best way to keep cats and dogs out of animal shelters is to spay and neuter all four-legged family members.

I understand why PETA created the ad and it makes sense for marketing but it seems mean. Nobody seems to care if Angelina and Brad had 6 kids in five years–so why do they are if the Duggars have so many kids?

What do you think?  Why are there so many Duggar haters?

The TLC series about the Duggar Family, 19 Kids and Counting, premieres Tuesday, February 2, 9PM ET/PT.  Tonight TLC will air special,  19 Kids and Counting: Special Duggar Delivery at 8PM ET/PT.

  1. Cindy says:

Where I live there are many large families, some even larger than the Duggars. Large families are more common than poeple realize. I have 8 children and would not change it for the world, even though when I was a teen I said I would not have any.

    • Mike says:

We raised 10 children, 5 boys and 5 girls. Life was great and now we have 11 grandchildren with one on the way. We raised them in a 5700 sq foot house with 6 bedrooms and 4 baths plus a “wash up” area near the kitchen located on 10 acres and not a single one of the kids would have it any other way. We also homeschooled most of the children and today 6 of them own their own business.

A comment to anna cho: I’ll bet 100% of the Dugger children will never be a burden on society. They are learning what it is like to be responsible. Another note: don’t you realize that they will be paying your social security some day? What a dumb comment! Kids that grow up looking after the little ones grow even closer as siblings than the majority of other very small families.

God is blessing them because they honor God!

  2. Gena says:

Some of us love the Duggars and respect what they have done. When comments are given that are contrary to the choices the Duggars have made does not mean that we hate them, it means we disagree with their interpretation of God will. Go into any two churches in this country and you will see two different interpretations of God’s word.
As to the comparision to Brad and Angelina, why don’t you compare apples to steak??? Don’t be silly!

B& A don’t have a lifestyle even remotely similar to the Duggars to begin with; then 6 is NO comparision to 19; and most of B&A’s children are adopted. Finally, multimillionaires who can hire several nannies and other caretakers to help them cannot be compared to the Duggar family and the work they put into raising their family.

Each person has a different personallity, what is right for one is not right for others. Somepeople make great parents and others you wonder if they had their heads shuved up their butts. My one siste makes a wonderful parent, I on the other hand think i am a better aunt then a mom. I think they have offered other things then big families different way of looking at things. If we get stuck on one little thing then other stuff gets left out

  3. Ryan says:

Dear Duggars from TLC. I am from Canada and respect your family size. I do have one question that bothers me some. I heard that you do not let your childern watch T.V.. Or if you do you really control the amount of T.V. or time that they can watch. My question is how can you control the amount of T.V. or what they watch when your family promotes T.V. and makes extra income from the use of T.V.? So Duggers are you saying or implying that its ok fro the rest of Canada or America and thos other countries to support and watch you on T.V. but not for your own childern? Do you feel that its ok for the rest of us to support you and expect us to watch T.V. and learn about your family yet you dont allow your own family to watch T.V.? This sounds wrong how can you promote T.V. yet also control or not allow programs into your own home. In one corner its ok for any other family to watch you on T.V. as it provides extra income and support but yet you speak out agianst T.V. or the amount of T.V. within your own home. Personally I find this to be a conflict of interest and would like to hear back on your comments about the T.V. vs no T.V. issue. Its not America’s choise or expectation that you had 19 kids and feel as if you need to stand out and gain support from T.V.?

  4. Mia says:

PETA is a joke. I hope the Duggars sue them and donate the money to a worthy cause. But that will never happen – the Duggars actually practice what they preach. Unlike Peta who kills animals instead of taking money they receive to take care of them. They are too busy wasting it on their horrible offensive ads.

By the way, people have strong feelings about PETA and most of it negative. Once people do a little research and see the horrors they commit on animals, they stop donating.

  5. Ki says:

i posted this elsewhere on this site; this is the lone problem i have with the duggar family.

we are able to control our own reproduction and are not limited by our environment as other animals are. this is something that can either be handled with care or abused, and the latter will certainly have dire consequences. a child is a gift; we need to make sure that we have enough time to understand each of our children personally and fully.

  6. Kristen says:

Why Duggar haters? Mostly I think it comes down to good old-fashioned ignorance. It is safer to hate what we don’t understand than to simply question it. Personally, as long as Jim Bob and Michelle are paying for their own children’s food, clothing, shelter, etc and not taking it from the taxpayers, they can have as many children as they want. What we should be upset about are the folks like Nadya Suleman who goes and has 14 children with no job, no substantial support, and takes public assistance to feed her brood. If she’d taken a page from the Duggar’s book and paid for her family herself no one would have cared.

Do I think the Duggar family has it all figured out? No. I expect some of the children to have a hard time adjusting to the world and making their own way since they are so sheltered. I think there could be some individuality issues as well since the children do not mingle much with those outside the family or others like them. If a Duggar child got into a situation like many young people do today I’m not sure they’d be able to handle it as effectively as those children who attended school outside their home or participated in non-religious activities.

Now that Michelle’s life was endangered by her pregnancy and baby Josie is so small and will likely face a lot of problems in her life I hope they see it as a sign from God and stop having children. Whether you have one child or nineteen children they need their mother in their lives, especially the small ones. When having babies becomes dangerous, it is time to stop. Still, I wish this family the best.

    • Erin says:

This is extremely ignorant. Michelle suffered from preeclampsia, which can happen at ANY age, after ANY amount of children. I was preeclamptic with my first child, at age 23, and I went on to have 6 more perfectly healthy children.

  7. Kathy says:

I enjoy watching their open expression of their faith and their children are delightful. I was at first skeptical that parents could do a good job with so many children, but as you watch them interact, the children are at least as close with their parents as I was with mine and I had only one sibling.

God bless them and I hope their new baby thrives.

  8. Angela says:

Yes…PETA is stupid! The Duggars are great and more power to them with their beautiful family! I love their show and I think their family is awesome! What a blessing they all are to watch on Tuesday nights!

  9. Colleen says:

I do watch the Duggar’s a lot of the time and to be honest, am fascinated by them. However, I do agree with PETA and feel that their comment was in jest and should not be taken to heart on the offensive. I agree with PETAs comment that the Duggar children wil never want for anything but there are thousand upon thousand of animals that cannot do for themselves and should NOT be killed. For me, the Duggars, while seemingly the perfect religious couple, are treading on very dangerous waters having so many kids and Michelle being in her 40s. Hopefully the scare of Josie’s birth will make them think about having more kids. What will it take for them to stop? Another miscarriage? A baby with special needs and/or a major handicap? They need to be grateful for the 19 kids they have and more on to enjoy their grandchildren.

  10. anna cho says:

I am a strong beleiver in “to each their own” (within reason of course) but I also do not think that it is fair to the children or the taxpayers that they have so many kids.I understand that children need independance but they also need to be able to be children and the older kids are not getting to live their lives because they have to look after the youngert kids.I think that they may be continuing to have children so they can have more publicity and make more money. which is really sad.

  11. Lisa says:

    Ryan, you’re stupid.

  12. Mindy says:

The Duggar’s are SALT and LIGHT; it breaks my heart to read such lewd comments directed toward them. I would be ashamed of myself. What can you expect from a fallen society brainwashed by humanism? They’re blind leading the blind. Wake up and repent!

    Godlessness in the Last Days:

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, DEPISERS of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.” – 2 Timothy 3:1-5

  13. Mindy says:

DESPISERS of those that are good (excuse the typo)

  14. Laura says:

As long as they can properly take care of, and pay for their children, I don’t care how many they choose to have. I think they are doing a fantastic job. How many people do you know that don’t owe for anything, have many children and don’t expect the tax payer to support them? I do think it may be time to think about stopping though… Little Josie is going to have a rough time of it, she may very well be a special needs child, and if so, will require a lot of time and medical help. I’m hoping the doctors advise them to stop now. They have been responsible up to this point. Bringing one special needs child into the world is one thing, but to continue and risk bringing more special needs children into the world is not at all responsible.

  15. KD says:

My problem with the Duggar’s is that they are not raising self-sufficient young women. Marriage and children are a great blessing, but there is more to life. Each of these children needs to have the opportunity to go to college and have a life outside of family. Jim Bob does not make enough money to raise all of his children’s children as well as his own 19 (and counting). If each girl gets married and has even eleven children and let’s say (by some freak thing) three husbands leave or die, there leaves 33 more children for him to financially assist because his girls are not able to get a job or do anything other than housework.
Even Amish children are given a year to go out and live life before they commit to the Amish faith. Maybe the Duggars should institute some similar policy in order to make sure their children grow into adults and not co-dependent Peter Pan kids.

    • shona says:

I do think that you have a point there, I think that they are being raised to have the woman stay at home and the man go out and make the money, like the old fashioned way of life, which is fine, unless like you said, something should happen to one of the husband’s. They need to think about things like this and have a plan set up just in case this does occur. Who knows, maybe they already have one.

  16. rayne says:

gahh. This is stupid. So is this family. These arent ppl…Anyone else think tht the only way to support their family, was by signing on this show? thts whtt jon and kate did..They made an estimated 25000 (minimum) per episode.

I also live in canada, and I agree with Ryan. they need to step into this decade, stop ‘having fun with each other’ or at least use a condom…
    Idiots!

    • trisha wheeler says:

THANK GOODNESS YOUR IN CANADA..STAY THERE!!! THIS FAMILY HAS BEEN TRULY BLESSED THEY ARE A STRONG FAMILY W/ STRONG VALUES..PEOPLE NOW A DAYS COULD LEARN FROM THEM….

      • Darcy says:

I’m from Canada, I do not agree with my fellow Canadians. I think the Duggars are great, though I wouldn’t choose the same lifestyle. Clearly, they can afford all of them and love them all very much. They all seem fairly well adjusted. I cannot imagine that they would EVER be on an episode of Supernanny or Wife Swap where we get to see some of the most disfunctional families with children and parents screaming at each other and hitting each other. I also think it’s fabulous that they have a buddy system. No one gets left out. They are a FAMILY, in the truest sense of the word, in my opinion. Everyone helps everyone and they love each other. There is far worse out there.

  17. shona says:

I believe that the Duggar’s have strong belief’s about their religion, I have met a lot of people that believe the same way they do. I think that it is fine for them to behave the way they do, so what if they don’t watch that much t.v. did it affect anybody back when there was no t.v.? They don’t allow their kids to dance probably because now a days everybody wants to make it a sexual matter. I think that all of their kids are extremely well behaved and well mannered. They have learned this from their parents. People need to quit saying they believe in God but they don’t agree with the way these people live their lives and then say mean and hateful things about them. If they believed in God then they wouldn’t be talking about them anyway. That’s a shame. Everyone makes mistakes, that doesn’t mean that if they have, as we all have, that it’s going to ruin the kids lives. Grow up people!!

  18. anita says:

Do you hear the Duggars complain about anyone choosing to have only one or two kids? Do they tell people to stop their barnyard approach to the blessing of children and stop getting themselves fixed like a common animal? Shove that, PETA!!
I think people have problems with the Duggars because it makes them uncomfortable and maybe make them question some of the choices they themselves have made.
Leave the Duggars alone to live their lives as they see fit. They aren’t a drain to your tax dollars or the environment or anything else. Maybe they shelter their kids to keep them away from haters like you!!!

  19. Jenna says:

Selfish, shallow, empty people. Children are not something you accumulate and count up. Quiverful = intellectually lacking.

    • Ki says:

i’m glad someone brought this up.

“They’re domestic warriors in the battle against what they see as forty years of destruction wrought by women’s liberation: contraception, women’s careers, abortion, divorce, homosexuality and child abuse, in that order.”

this is for those who are quick to judge those who are a bit irked by this family’s values. the above quote was taken from the article below, which gives an overview of quiverfull beliefs.

  20. carle says:

Jim Bobo and Michelle are so reckless by getting pregnant at 43 and just a few months after giving birth to #18. Do they think she’s invincible? Well she is not and now a poor baby has to suffer due to their recklessness. Chances are strong the baby will have many developmental and physical problems.

Who is and will pay for all this care?

In addition, the little kids at home are running amuck. They don’t go to school or have anything to do to develop their interests or individuallity. They are just clones in Jim Bobo’s kingdom. The girls are nanny’s and maids so J & can M keep having more kids. They will be married young and have no chance to do anything else with themselves besides be wives and mothers. Poor Anna and Josh. They looked totally overwhelmed by having to take care of the little kids. They should be in college now, enjoying that experience rather than babysitters.

The kids should have choices. However, without additional education, friends, part-time jobs, what choices do they have? None. That is not what America is all about.

    Does anyone else see this?

  21. pmscholl says:

I love and admire Mr. & Mrs. Dugger for the way they honor God and fully submit to His authority. I think many dislike them for the same reason and it has nothing to do with how many children they have or how they dress or their lifestyle. There are many who hate God and Godly people and would like to destroy what they represent. Granted they are not perfect but they are doing their best to submit to the will of God to the best of their understanding.

  22. commonsense says:

I read an article talking about the quiverful movement. And that most of the families with x amount of kids receive county or local gov assistance! The article went on to say that the quiverful movement, was a financial drain to the social services in that area! The article was written by a social service employee from Arkansas! Must not be a very affordable lifesyle after all!

  23. Jullie says:

it is amazing how some people can distort reality…One thing is to think uauu these guys are crazy for having that many children, (even though they have proven to be able to take care of them very well); but another thing is to call them selfish, empty etc..seriously I can imagine those people are so spirited and nice and care so much about the society and this world…haha…
About the college experience, one should think that different people have different experiences in life , and if college is on their way , I am certain God will provide to them , but why the college experience would be important to them if they didn’t even go to school??

And to those who say their are Christians stop criticizing their family for they have some testimony of trust in the Lord and there is no fault in them.

  24. carle says:

Of course they make a lot of $$$ off the show. Do you think they are stupid? No. They know how to use the system. They even claim their home as a church and don’t pay any taxes. That’s why they are supposedly debt free. Who cares? I’d rather have a little debt and let my kids wear nice clothes and shoes, and enjoy life. But, what’s up with not allowing their kids to have choices, like education, friends, jobs, outside interests and activities? Michelle is a baby making machine for Jim Bozo. She only interacts with the youngest baby not the other kids. The older girls raise them. That is the way it works. This is selfish parenting. Who in their right mind would have 2 kids within a year at the age of 43? That’s crazy.

  25. jon holmes says:

Her vagaina must look like a busted balloon animal. Holy shit man…

  26. Donna says:

Wow…maybe I didn’t read far enough back but I’m amazed that no one has mentioned the environmental impact of having 19 children. If we all had 19 children soon America would be the next China with overpopulation. And what sort of a world would that be creating for your children, grandchildren, etc? And while we are all individuals and what is right for one is not right for another, I still find it hard to understand how it is good parenting when you need to sign a “sign up” sheet to get time with a parent. No animosity towards the Duggars I just think they are doing the wrong thing here. Seriously…they could have adopted 19 kids…that would have been more honorable.

  27. Jullie says:

I don’t understand what is so honorable about adopting 19 children if you don’t have the necessary conditions of raise them…
and about the supposedly not enough time for the children , how many parents of 2 children are spending enough time with their children nowadays in a dual income family…childminders … are the real mother to those children nowadays at least in the duggar family their “nannies” (as some people claim about the older girls helping with the younger kids)are family members not strangers being paid to do so…
