Creating a harmonious, organized and imaginative room for your child is important to their physical and emotional well-being. Feng shui (the ancient Chinese art of placement) offers techniques to create a gentle flow of energy within the surroundings as well as guide for purposeful décor choices that generate happiness and success.
Using feng shui in your child’s room can positively affect the way they learn to experience the world. Everything your child sees, touches, tastes, smells and hears affects their thoughts and feelings. Adding the right color can stimulate or relax them while hanging a happy piece of art across from the bed will set the tone for the day. As a parent, you are in a great position to control the décor (at least until their tweens) to encourage learning, creativity and self-confidence.
Here are some tips for good feng shui in your child’s room!
1. Clear the Clutter – Clutter creates too much stimulation which can stop your child from getting a good night’s sleep. Loads of toys, clothes, and books scattered on the floor brings the energy down. When your child receives a new item make sure to donate or give away the old, worn out , unused or unloved items to keep a positive flow of energy. Clutter creates confusion and overwhelm so do your best to keep it at bay.
2. Be Organized – Get creative with good storage solutions such as covered bins, baskets, containers, boxes and hampers in cheerful colors. Closed door cabinets work best to keep your child from being over-stimulated, especially for the toys. Label each shelf in the cabinet to teach your child how to put things back in an orderly way.
3. Sleep Soundly – Place the headboard of the bed against a solid wall with a view of the door. Your child will sleep more soundly when protected by the wall as opposed to under a window. Being able to see you when you open the door creates security.
4. Invite Sunlight – Open the drapes and make sure the room has ample natural sunlight so your child’s mood is enhanced. If the room is naturally dark, use full-spectrum light bulbs to create artificial sunshine.
5. Paint Walls – The best colors to use in a child’s room are light pastels such as green, blue, beige, pink, peach, lavender, cream, and tan. To motivate a shy child, add a few accents in bright colors such as yellow, red, and orange. To calm an overly stimulated child, add medium shades of blue.
6. Remove Fear – Take down items that are hanging above your child’s head. An abundance of mobiles, flying animals, and overflowing shelves create fear. Your child feels more secure when he is not concerned about items falling on his head.
7. Hang Positive Artwork – Images with positive symbolism creates happy children. The most important place to hang their favorite piece of art is across from the bed. Perhaps you can hang a series of your child’s happy artwork to create a rotating art gallery.
8. Work Separately – If there is a desk in the bedroom, cover the computer and work materials with a piece of fabric when they are not in use to create a calm night’s sleep.
9. Bring Nature indoors – Add a healthy plant or fish tank to generate positive energy in the room. Watering the plant and feeding the fish teaches your child about nature and responsibility.
10. Set Goals – It’s never too early to help your child set goals. Create an inspiration board using a corkboard and hang up pictures and words of what they want to do, whether it’s learn tennis, play an instrument, meet a mentor or visit a special city. They can also display their accomplishments on this board such as awards and certificates of excellence.
