Review: Hell Is Other Parents

hehell is other parents cover 191x300 Review: Hell Is Other ParentsOh yes. Sanctimommies. We all know them. The women who just have to give you their two-cents on what you’re doing wrong with your child: why what you’re feeding them will cause cancer, the proper way to apply sunscreen or how to discipline the “right” way.

That’s the subject of a new collection of stories by Deborah Copaken Kogan, a mom of three and photojournalist who lives in New York. She appeared on the Today Show recently to talk about Hell Is Other Parents.

The collection of tales in which Kogan chronicles interactions with various parents and her struggles to balance her career and family amongst legions of opinionated parents is laugh out loud hilarious…and incredibly relatable. Not only will you find common ground in the experiences the author shares, but you might just check your behavior next time you’re at the playground!

Loved reading Hell is Other Parents — but then again I live in NYC so the context may not translate perfectly to people living in other places. The stories perfectly capture the chaotic blend of privilege and stress that comes with raising kids in NYC and trying to balance hyper-active personal and work lives while being nurturing parents to young children and keeping the wheels from coming off the family bus each day.

It resonated with me and the author is fiercely authentic and honest as a story-teller.
