Need more than a 24-ounce Venti coffee at Starbucks to get you going? If testing goes well in select markets, your local Starbucks could soon be offering a fourth beverage size — the Trenta –to coffee (and tea) lovers. While more java might be exactly what you need to wake up some mornings, the reality is that the new 32-ounce size could pack more calories than necessary.
Right now, a 16-ounce Grande beverage could run up to 420 calories…doubling the drink would end up in a caloric intake equal to one-and-a-half McDonald’s Big Macs! As DietsinReview.com points out, even an Iced Latte in the new size would come close to 300 calories.
What do you think? Do we need super-sizing at Starbucks?
Update: Starbucks sent us an official statement about the new size:
While we have introduced the Trenta size (31 oz.) in certain markets, it is simply a new item we are testing in response to our customers asks for larger iced tea and coffee. Trenta is only available for iced teas and iced coffees. Unsweetened the beverages are less than 5 calories, but even a sweetened iced coffee or tea in a Trenta cup would be less than 200 calories.
