If you’ve ever tried (successfully or not) to lose weight, then you’ll likely agree that the diet industry is, quite frankly, exhausting. One minute, fats will give us heart disease. The next minute, we’re hearing that carbohydrates will slowly kill you. Some diets preach low-calorie foods laden with high-fructose corn syrup while others recommend primal style of eating.
I’m not going to pretend that I’ve never flirted with the South Beach Diet, but I’m glad to see the editors of Health magazine taking a new approach: embracing carbohydrates as part of a healthy diet to help drop pounds or keep your waistline in check.
The Carblover’s Diet, written in collaboration between Health magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Ellen Kunes and Senior Food & Nutrition Editor Frances Largeman-Roth, RD, reveals how to enjoy formerly forbidden foods like pasta, bread and sweets.
As a carb-lover myself, I liked reading about Resistant Starch, which is a “type of dietary fiber naturally found in many carbohydrate-rich foods such as potatoes, grains and beans. It gets its name because it “resists” digestion in the body, keeping you fuller longer, according to Prevention Magazine.
While the book shares some valuable information about how to eat carbohydrates as part of a balanced diet it makes one serious claim that didn’t sit well with me: “eating carbs is the only proven way to get and stay thin!”
Because I know and love the editors at Health I’m going to assume they mean “eating carbs as part of a healthy, well-balanced diet that includes lean protein, fruits and vegetables” is the only proven way to get and stay thin.
Girl cannot live on potatoes alone.
