Saturday Snacks: 7/31 Links from Around the Web

In case you missed some of the food finds and culinary happenings around the web this week, here is a round up of some of the news that made my eyebrows raise, recipes that made my mouth water and kitchen gadgets that I’m coveting.

National Ice Cream Sandwich Day: If you’re an ice cream fiend like I am, celebrate your favorite ice cream sandwich this Monday on one of our national food holidays. If you think the kind of ice cream sandwiches you can buy in the grocery store all taste the same like I do, try Disney’s Family Fun Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Sandwich. You’ll miss them when the summer turns into September.

Splenda’s Send-a-Pie: I don’t personally like Splenda (artificial, chemical, I won’t bore you with the details) but they caught my eye with their latest Facebook application that lets users send virtual pies to friends to help feed the hungry.  The Splenda brand is donating $50,000 to Meals on Wheels and if more than 25,000 virtual slices of pie are shared between Independence Day and Labor Day, the company will donate an additional $5,000 to MOWAA. I might not be one for artificial sweeteners, but I can’t say no to helping a good cause.

Boiled Water: Adam Kuban’s latest addition to his recipe collection o Serious Eats offers up a tongue-in-cheek edition of Cooking 101. With his recipe for Boiled Water, Kuban proves something that I’ve suspected for a long time: as a country, we need some help learning how to cook and we need it ASAP. If you think you need some instruction – or just a chuckle, head on over for tips like “Note: DO NOT WATCH THE POT; it will never boil in the event that you do.”

Boston Public Food Market Approved slated to get its own downtown public food market — a showcase for New England food producers to sell locally grown produce, artisan cheeses, seafood, and meats. The idea of a downtown food market has been on the table for quite sometime, but  it’s currently looking as though the market could be open in as soon as a year.
